Softball claims first MIAC sweep with two run-rule wins over Augsburg

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College softball team racked up 20 runs on 30 hits in a pair of run-rule victories over Augsburg University, winning by scores of 10-2 and 10-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Mabel Shirley Field.

St. Olaf (15-13, 6-6 MIAC) hit .545 (30-for-55) as a team and held Augsburg (13-17, 4-8 MIAC) to a .189 average (7-for-37) while recording its first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) sweep of the season. Seven Oles had at least three hits on the day, led by senior Medora Rylee, who was 5-for-6 with four doubles, a walk, three RBI, and four runs scored. St. Olaf has won 13 of the last 14 meetings in the series going back to 2018.

The Oles will visit Hamline University on Saturday, April 19 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Meredith Field in St. Paul.

St. Olaf 10, Augsburg 2 (5 inn.) | Box Score

After falling behind twice in the first two-and-a-half innings, St. Olaf scored twice in the third, twice in the fourth, and five times in the fifth to end game one via the run rule. Rylee recorded the third four-hit game of her career, going 4-for-4 with three doubles, two RBI, and three runs scored.

Rylee was one of six Oles with multi-hit performances, as St. Olaf racked up a season-high 16 hits in game one. Sophomore Regan Zak, sophomore Eva Hokanson, senior Amelia Christenson, junior Belle Schmidt, and junior Elle Brandt collected two hits apiece.

Fifth-year senior Jaelyn Orth registered her fifth victory of the season in the circle by limiting the Auggies to two runs on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts in the five-inning complete game. The six-strikeout performance marked Orth's fourth game this season with at least six strikeouts.

After Morgann Paaske homered in the top of the first, St. Olaf answered in the bottom of the inning on a two-out RBI single by Hokanson after Rylee doubled with two outs and got to third on a passed ball. The Auggies reclaimed the lead in the top of the third on a RBI single by Paaske to take a 2-1 advantage.

The Augsburg lead did not last long again, however, as St. Olaf scored twice in the bottom of the inning to grab the lead for good. After Rylee doubled and Hokanson singled to start the inning, Christenson knocked in a run with a groundout. Later in the inning, Schmidt plated Hokanson from third with a two-out infield hit to break the tie.

In the fourth, the Oles added runs when Zak tripled and scored on a groundout by fifth-year senior Shreya Ashok and Christenson singled with two outs to bring in Rylee. St. Olaf ended the game early by scoring five runs on five hits and three Augsburg errors in the bottom of the fifth. Orth and Ashok delivered run-scoring hits in the inning, which also included a two-run double by Rylee.

St. Olaf 10, Augsburg 1 (5 inn.) | Box Score

Augsburg again opened the scoring in the top of the first in game two, but St. Olaf scored six runs in the bottom of the inning and added four in the third to register another run-rule victory. All nine spots in the order had at least one hit for the Oles.

Ashok, Hokanson, Christenson, junior Madyn Singleton, and Brandt picked up two hits apiece, including Brandt's team-leading fourth home run of the season. First year Amelia Burns earned her first collegiate victory by striking out three in 2.0 innings of one-hit ball in relief of Singleton, who fanned four while allowing one run on two hits in the first 3.0 innings.

After the Auggies scored their lone run of the game in the top of the first, six of the first seven Oles to come to the plate in the bottom of the inning got a hit, as St. Olaf tallied six runs on seven hits and two Augsburg errors in the inning. Christenson delivered a two-run single and Singleton doubled in two more in the six-run frame.

The rest of the game's scoring came when St. Olaf pushed across four runs in the bottom of the third. After Singleton doubled to deep right center to start the inning, Brandt belted a two-run home run to left to extend the Oles' lead to 8-1. Rylee knocked in a run with her fourth double of the day and scored on a single up the middle by Hokanson to close out the scoring.

With three hits on the day, Ashok tied Tarah DeCroock '23 for third in program history with 172 for her career. The fifth-year senior also moved into 10th place all-time in runs scored (92) after scoring once in each game.
