ST. PETER, Minn. – The fourth-seeded St. Olaf College women's tennis team concluded its season with a 4-0 loss to top-seeded and No. 21-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College in the semifinals of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs on Friday afternoon at Swanson Tennis Center.
After advancing to the semifinals for the 10th time, St. Olaf (13-4) bowed out of the tournament with the loss to nationally-ranked Gustavus (25-7), which claimed 6-0 victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles and straight-set wins at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 6 singles to move on to the championship match. The loss brought an end to the careers of seniors
Sarah Clark,
Fiona O'Flaherty,
Jane Spading, and
Olha Zubarieva.
St. Olaf's 13-4 record marked its highest single-season win total since also winning 13 matches in 2010-11. The last time the Oles won more matches than they did this season was 2008-09, when St. Olaf finished 15-6.
Gustavus grabbed the doubles point by not dropping a game at No. 2 or No. 3 doubles. Spading and Zubarieva held a 3-2 lead over Gustavus' nationally-ranked duo of Karina Elvestrom and Kaya De Bruijn when the match was pulled off court with the doubles point already decided.
Elvestrom and Brooke Haddorff posted straight-set wins at the top and bottom of the singles lineup for the Gusties, while De Bruijn did so at No. 2 singles in the three matches that finished. Gustavus was within two games of winning the other three singles matches, with the closest margin being Lanie Davis' 6-4, 4-3 lead over junior
Alexandra Berns at No. 4 singles.
