NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Junior
Emily Johnson and sophomore
Rachel Anderson combined for five goals for the regionally-ranked St. Olaf College women's soccer team in a 6-1 non-conference victory over UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
Johnson netted the first hat trick of her career and Anderson added the first two-goal performance of hers, as the duo propelled St. Olaf (4-1-0) past UW-Stevens Point (2-2-1) with the largest margin of victory in the series for either team. The Oles, who were ranked No. 6 in this week's initial United Soccer Coaches Region IX Poll of the season, are 3-0-2 in the last five meetings with the Pointers dating back to 2019.
Johnson scored all three of her goals in the first 13 minutes for her third game this season with multiple goals before Anderson added two first-half goals of her own in St. Olaf's five-goal opening 45 minutes. After UW-Stevens Point scored in the first minute of the second half, senior
Marit Klagge closed out the scoring less than five minutes later to add a goal to her two assists in the win.
Johnson started the scoring inside the first two minutes by scoring on a breakaway after Klagge flicked on a long ball from the back from senior
Katie Beaudry. Johnson doubled her tally in the ninth minute with a shot from inside the box after Klagge and
Wren VanDeWalker combined to get the ball to the junior in front of goal.
In the 13th minute, Johnson completed her hat trick by getting in front of the goalie to turn in a cross from junior
Roxanne Rundle on the left side. Johnson's hat trick vaulted her into the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) lead with seven this season, a figure that matches her totals from each of her first two seasons.
Anderson made it 4-0 inside the opening 20 minutes by racing in behind off a throw-in from senior
Clara Kubis and slotting the ball home. Fifteen minutes later, Anderson added another with a shot from outside the box that the UW-Stevens Point goalie got fingertips to but could not keep out.
Sophia Ryan got the Pointers on the board just 27 seconds into the second half with a close-range shot before Klagge rounded out the scoring by putting in a rebound off her initial header after VanDeWalker's shot hit the under side of the crossbar and stayed out.
St. Olaf held advantages of 29-7 in shots and 15-4 in shots on goal in the game and took seven of the game's eight corner kicks. First year
Charlotte Percy registered another win with three saves over the first 56-plus minutes before making way for sophomore
Ava Williams, who did not face a shot over the final 33-plus minutes.
In their final game before conference play begins, the Oles will visit the University of Northwestern-St. Paul on Saturday, Sept. 13 for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
