ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's basketball team played Hamline University even through the first three quarters before going cold in the fourth quarter of a 54-39 loss on Saturday afternoon at Hutton Arena.
St. Olaf (5-10, 0-8 MIAC) and Hamline (12-3, 6-2 MIAC) were tied at 36-36 through three quarters before the Pipers outscored the Oles by an 18-3 margin in the fourth quarter to claim the 15-point win. Hamline limited St. Olaf to one field goal in the final quarter while shooting 8-for-14 (57.1 percent) over the final 10 minutes to extend its winning streak to eight games.
First years
Erin Schauer and Emmaunella Sennowo were the top scorers for the Oles with eight points apiece. Schauer made a pair of three-pointers to go with four steals and three rebounds, while Sennowo was 3-for-5 from the field in an eight-point, five-rebound day off the bench. St. Olaf shot at least 40.0 percent in each of the first three quarters but was plagued by 25 turnovers in the loss.
Anna Rynkiewich scored a team-high 16 points on 8-for-11 shooting off the bench to lead three Pipers in double figures. Camille Cummings and Sophie Stork added 10 points apiece, with Stork also tallying seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Hamline shot just 5-for-23 (21.7 percent) from three-point range but was 17-for-28 (60.7 percent) from inside the arc.
Schauer hit all three of her shots, two from behind the arc, in an eight-point first quarter that ended with St. Olaf on top, 15-12. The Oles scored the final five points of the quarter to take the lead after 10 minutes, capped by a three-pointer by Schauer with 1:08 remaining.
Despite a 10-point second quarter from Rynkiewich, who was 5-for-5 from the field in the quarter, St. Olaf carried a 26-24 lead into the halftime break. Hamline seemed poised to take a 24-23 lead into the half but fouled sophomore
Elise Hahn on a three-pointer at the buzzer. Hahn made all three free throws to account swing the lead back to the Oles.
St. Olaf took its largest lead of the game at 33-27 four minutes into the third quarter after starting the quarter on a 7-3 run. Hamline responded by holding the Oles scoreless for nearly four minutes in a 9-0 run that gave the hosts a 36-33 advantage before first year
Norah Bickett hit a three-pointer with 2:07 to go for the final points of the quarter.
Hamline held St. Olaf to a solitary field goal – a layup by Sennowo with 6:18 remaining – in the fourth quarter to come away with the victory. After Sennowo's layup, the Pipers scored the final 11 points of the game while holding the Oles to 0-for-10 shooting from three-point range in the fourth.
St. Olaf will travel to Winona to take on Saint Mary's University at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 21.
