Terebayza strikes early in OT, women's hockey sweeps Concordia-Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Senior Molly Terebayza scored just 19 seconds into overtime as the St. Olaf College women's hockey team completed a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) sweep of Concordia-Moorhead with a 5-4 road win on Saturday afternoon at Moorhead Sports Center.

After Concordia (7-10-0, 4-6-0 MIAC) rallied from a pair of deficits to force the game to overtime, Terebayza gave St. Olaf (9-8-0, 6-4-0 MIAC) its ninth consecutive victory in the series early in the extra session. The 5-4 win marked the 13th of the Oles' 17 games this season that has been decided by a one-goal margin.

Senior Solvei Berg-Messerole led St. Olaf with a season-high four points on one goal and three assists, while sophomore Nora McConnell registered a goal and two assists. Terebayza added a goal and an assist. Sophomore Jocelyn Orr tallied her first collegiate goal in the win as well. Berg-Messerole's four-point performance was her fourth game as an Ole with at least four points.

Senior Emma Heath got St. Olaf on the board first with a power-play goal off assists from Terebayza and Berg-Messerole at the 11:30 mark of the opening period to give the Oles a 1-0 lead at the first intermission. Concordia-Moorhead snatched the lead with two goals in the first seven minutes of the second, getting goals from Addie Moos and Keira Hauskins 2:56 apart to take a 2-1 lead.

The Cobbers' lead barely lasted one minute, however, as Heath set up a Berg-Messerole goal 1:18 after the hosts had gone ahead to make it a 2-2 game at the second intermission. Berg-Messerole's goal was her team-leading eighth of the season, while Heath got into double figures in points on the season with her two-point performance.

McConnell netted St. Olaf's second power-play goal of the game just 22 seconds into the third period to swing the lead back to the Oles, but Concordia-Moorhead got a power-play goal of its own less than three minutes later to quickly tie it back up. Orr struck for her first collegiate goal at 7:03 of the third to get St. Olaf back on top, but the Cobbers forced the fourth tie of the game with 4:54 to go in the third on a goal by Memphis Mertens.

Shortly after Berg-Messerole won the opening faceoff in overtime, McConnell got the puck to Berg-Messerole along the left boards and Berg-Messerole left it for Terebayza, who outskated a Cobber from left to right before scoring the game-winning goal less than 20 seconds in. Terebayza's goal gave her a goal in three consecutive games and goals in six of the Oles' last seven games.

Senior Hannah Fritz collected her second win of the season with a 29-save effort between the pipes for St. Olaf. Anny Huselid made 23 stops in the loss for Concordia-Moorhead, which held a 33-28 edge in shots on goal. The Oles were 2-for-3 on the power play, while the Cobbers were 1-for-5.

St. Olaf will travel to Minneapolis to open its series against nationally-ranked Augsburg University at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30.
