ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's basketball team had a look to win the game on the final possession but came up empty in a 51-50 loss to Macalester College on Saturday afternoon at the Leonard Center.
Trailing by one, St. Olaf (5-14, 0-12 MIAC) got a stop to give itself a chance to win it in the final seconds, but first year
Erin Schauer's contested shot in the paint would not go as Macalester (2-16, 1-11 MIAC) held on for the win. The Oles tied up the rebound after Schauer's miss and were given the ball on a baseline out-of-bounds play with 0.2 seconds left but a desperation tip came up short.
Sophomore
Elise Hahn recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive end. Hahn did most of her scoring at the free-throw line where she was 11-for-13. Junior
Joy Brandenstein was also in double figures with 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting, including a 3-for-5 mark from three-point range.
Hahn's work on the glass helped St. Olaf to a 46-28 rebounding advantage as the Oles turned 18 offensive rebounds into a 17-5 edge in second-chance points. Sophomore
Grace Gertner also grabbed nine rebounds and had five steals defensively.
Sydnee Smith led Macalester with 15 points, four rebounds, three blocks, three steals, and two assists while shooting 6-for-11 from the field and 3-for-6 from behind the arc. Mary Daley added 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Cady Davis had 10 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists. Macalester shot just 3-for-18 (16.7 percent) from three-point range.
Hahn and Brandenstein combined for 15 of St. Olaf's 18 points in the first quarter to lead the Oles to an 18-14 lead. After trailing 12-7, St. Olaf went on an 8-0 run late in the quarter to take a 15-12 lead before Brandenstein beat the buzzer with a three-pointer to send the Oles into the second up by four.
Macalester limited St. Olaf to eight points and got eight points from Smith in the second quarter to take a 27-26 lead into the half. A layup by junior
Bree Wilkerson gave the Oles a 24-19 lead midway through the quarter before an 8-0 run put the Scots on top.
In the third, Macalester pushed its lead to 35-29 a little over three minutes in before first year
Emmanuella Sennowo capped a 6-0 run with a three-point play to tie the game at 35-35. Sennowo provided a lift off the bench with five points in the quarter, which ended with the Scots up by two at 41-39.
Schauer started the fourth quarter with a three-point play to ignite a 7-0 run that ended with a Brandenstein three-pointer that gave St. Olaf its largest lead of the afternoon at 47-41. Macalester held the Oles scoreless for over six minutes after Brandenstein's three-pointer. Brandenstein broke a 47-47 tie with a jumper with 2:31 to go, but the Scots scored the next four points and got enough stops defensively to hold on.
St. Olaf will visit Bethel University for a 7 p.m. start on Wednesday, Feb. 4 in Arden Hills.
