Trinity edges softball twice in Oles' final games in Texas

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The St. Olaf College softball team wrapped up its eight-game Texas trip with 8-5 and 4-3 losses to Trinity University on Friday evening at Trinity Softball Field.

After dropping game one, St. Olaf (7-7) faced a 4-0 deficit to Trinity (12-5-1) heading into the seventh inning of game two. The Oles fought back with three runs and had the bases loaded with still nobody out before the Tigers escaped the jam to complete the sweep in the first meetings between the two programs since 2015.

St. Olaf is scheduled to host UW-La Crosse in its home opener at 3 and 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 26.

Trinity 8, St. Olaf 5 | Box Score

St. Olaf rallied from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game at 3-3 in the fourth, but Trinity scored three times in the next half inning and went on to take the opener, 8-5. The Tigers scored all eight of their runs in the third through fifth innings.

First year Hannah Yaeger recorded the first three-hit game of her collegiate career, going 3-for-4 with one RBI. First year Addie Hock added a two-run double, while junior Regan Zak was 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.

Senior Roxanne Ring went the distance in the circle for the Oles, falling to 5-2 on the season with the six-inning complete game. Seven Tigers recorded at least one hit and the hosts stole six bases in the game.

St. Olaf put the first run of the game on the board in the top of the first. With runners on second and third and two outs, junior Eva Hokanson brought in Zak with an infield hit before Trinity got out of the inning to strand two Oles on base.

Trinity scored three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third to take a two-run lead, but St. Olaf responded with two runs in the top of the fourth. With runners on the corners and two outs, Hock dropped a two-run double inside the right-field line to tie the game at 3-3.

The tie did not last long, however, as the Tigers plated three runs on just two hits in the next half inning. Trailing 6-3, the Oles got two of the runs back in an inning that started with back-to-back walks. After a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, Yaeger singled to shallow left to score Brandt. The second run of the inning came in on a ground out by first year Joy Jung.

Trinity made it five consecutive half innings with multiple runs for the two teams with what proved to be the final two runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth. The Tigers set the Oles down in order in the final two innings to finish off the win.

Trinity 4, St. Olaf 3 | Box Score

Senior Madyn Singleton held Trinity to three hits in game two, but the hosts held off St. Olaf despite the Oles' seventh-inning rally. Three of St. Olaf's five hits came in the final half inning before the Oles left the bases loaded to end the game.

In addition to its five hits, St. Olaf drew nine walks in the game but left 12 runners on base in the loss. Yager had a two-run double in the seventh and was one of five Oles with one hit apiece. Junior Kyra Narum was 1-for-2 with two walks and one RBI.

Singleton dropped to 2-3 on the season after surrendering four runs (three earned) on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts in her second complete game of the season.

Trinity broke through in a scoreless game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth after the first two batters of the inning were retired. St. Olaf left nine runners on base in the first six innings, including multiple runners on in the second, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

The Tigers added runs to their lead in the fifth and sixth innings to carry a 4-0 lead into the seventh. Brandt and Zak started St. Olaf's rally with a single and a walk before Yaeger brought them both in with a double to center. After a pair of walks filled the bases, Narum dropped an RBI single into shallow left field to make it a 4-3 game with the bases still loaded, but Trinity got the final three batters out without allowing the tying run to score.
