Pusterla's walk-off single gets baseball extra-inning win over Union

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – First year Lucas Pusterla delivered a walk-off single in the 10th inning to give the St. Olaf College baseball team a 6-5 win over Union College (N.Y.) on Sunday at Chain of Lakes Park.

With the score locked at 5-5, Pusterla dropped a single into right field with runners on second and third and one out that brought in junior Cole Pleimann for the game-winning run for St. Olaf (5-10). The win over Union (4-7) snapped the Oles' seven-game losing skid.

Nine different hitters had at least one hit in the win for St. Olaf. Senior Mason Buck got on base in four of his five plate appearances, going 2-for-3 with two walks and a three-run home run. Pleimann also had a two-hit game, finishing 2-for-5 with a run scored and one RBI.

First year Tate Williams and sophomore Josiah Utsch combined to throw 7.1 innings of two-run ball in relief of first year Brady Gelling. Williams limited the Garnet Chargers to one run on two hits with one walk and one strikeout in 4.1 innings before Utsch yielded a single run on four hits over 3.0 innings. First year Jack Leisen-Whelan collected his first collegiate win by throwing a scoreless top of the 10th, working around a leadoff walk.

Union jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the second and maintained that advantage until the bottom of the fourth. With runners on first and second and two outs, senior Breckin Hadley singled through the left side to score senior Frank Lavin and get the Oles on the board.

After having just two hits in the first four innings, St. Olaf surged into the lead with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by Buck's three-run home run. After senior Brendan Goldman and first year Neil Sevigny started the inning with back-to-back singles before moving up 90 feet on a bunt by first year Dex Pudduck, Buck homered to left field to put the Oles on top, 4-3, with his first home run of the season. Pleimann plated the final run of the inning with a ground out after hits by seniors Henry Black and Lavin.

In the top of the seventh, the Garnet Chargers battled back with a pair of runs to tie the game at 5-5 before Utsch got out of the inning, stranding the go-ahead run at second. Union put runners on first and second with two outs in the ninth, but Utsch got a fielder's choice to end the threat.

St. Olaf had a golden opportunity to win it in the bottom of the ninth as the Oles filled the bases on walks to bring Lavin to the plate with one out. Lavin hit a line drive to third that went in and out of the third baseman's glove, but he recovered to get an out at home and another at third to wriggle the Garnet Chargers out of the inning.

Leisen-Whelan got out of a two-on, two-out jam in the top of the 10th to give St. Olaf another shot at a walk-off win. Pleimann started the inning with a single up the middle before junior Kanen Kreafle reached on an error by the third baseman. After an unsuccessful bunt attempt and a ground out, Kreafle and Pleimann were both in scoring position for Pusterla, who won it with a single to right.

The Oles will wrap up their Florida trip with a 10 a.m. CDT start against Middlebury College on Monday, March 23.
