Lavin and Hruska guide baseball to game-one win at Carleton, game two suspended

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College baseball team picked up its eighth consecutive win over crosstown-rival Carleton College by winning game one by a 10-4 margin before game two was suspended due to darkness with the teams tied at 8-8 after five innings on Thursday at Mel Taube Field.

With both teams playing their second Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) doubleheader in as many days, St. Olaf (8-15, 3-4 MIAC) extended its winning streak over Carleton (5-13, 3-3 MIAC) in the opener thanks to a five-RBI game from senior Frank Lavin and a complete game from junior Sam Hruska. In the nightcap, the Knights held an 8-4 lead, but the Oles scored four runs in the fifth to tie it up before the game was called.

No stats from game two are official until the game is completed at a later date. St. Olaf is scheduled to host the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday, April 11 in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at Mark Almli Field.

St. Olaf 10, Carleton 4 | Box Score

Lavin and Hruska combined to lead St. Olaf to a win in the opener, as Lavin was 3-for-3 with five RBI and Hruska tossed a complete game. After trailing 4-0 early, the Knights cut the Oles' lead to 5-3 in the fifth before St. Olaf pulled away late.

Lavin provided enough offense on his own to win the game for the Oles by going 3-for-4 with a home run and a career-high-tying five RBI. Senior Henry Black got on base four times during a 3-for-4 performance that included a hit-by-pitch, three runs scored, and two RBI. First year Lucas Pusterla added two hits, a walk, and scored twice.

Hruska threw the first complete game of his collegiate career, holding Carleton to four runs despite surrendering 10 hits. The junior did not walk a batter and struck out two in his first win of the season.

St. Olaf jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first to give Hruska an early cushion. After the first batter was retired, Black was hit by a pitch, junior Kanen Kreafle singled, and junior Cole Pleimann walked to fill the bases for Lavin, who dropped a single into center field to score two. Senior Breckin Hadley followed with a sacrifice fly to cap the three-run frame.

In the third, Black and Kreafle started the inning with back-to-back singles and were on second and third before Lavin brought in Black with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0. The Knights chipped away at their deficit with singles runs in the third and fourth before a two-out single in the fifth by Lavin again scored black to push St. Olaf's lead to 5-2.

Carleton got the run back in the home half of the fifth, but the Oles responded with a two-run single by Black in the sixth after he came to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. The Knights got back within three runs at 7-4 in the bottom of the sixth before St. Olaf scored three runs to extend its lead to six in the seventh.

Lavin led off the seventh with his team-leading fourth home run of the season – the 12th of his career – before two more runs came in on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Mason Buck later in the inning, which included three wild pitches by Carleton.
