Emily Johnson broke the St. Olaf College women's soccer team's all-time record for career points by scoring both goals in the Oles' 2-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) victory over Augsburg University on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
Johnson entered the day one point shy of the record of 96 career points held by Lindsay Howard '12 and surpassed Howard's total by scoring once in each half to lead St. Olaf (6-0-3, 3-0-0 MIAC) past Augsburg (1-4-2, 1-1-1 MIAC). The two-goal performance gave Johnson 99 career points and raised her program-record goals total to 43 for her career.
The victory marked the third consecutive shutout to start MIAC play for the Oles, who were ranked No. 5 in this week's United Soccer Coaches Region IX Poll. St. Olaf's 6-0-3 start is its longest unbeaten start to a season since 2011 (8-0-2).
Johnson, who began the day tied for the NCAA Division III lead with 12 goals this season, got the game's opening goal in the 15th minute by outrunning an Augsburg defender into the box and slotting the ball in at the near post from the right side. The goal was the 14th game-winning goal of Johnson's career, tying the senior with Mackenzie Schoustra '20 for the most in recorded program history.
Early in the second half, Johnson doubled the Oles' lead by firing a low, left-footed shot inside the right post after collecting a pass from first year
Emmarie Becker, who picked up her first collegiate assist on the goal. After not scoring in St. Olaf's season opener, Johnson has scored at least once in each of the last eight games with five multi-goal performances during that stretch.
St. Olaf held sizable advantages in shots (27-2) and shots on goal (10-1) in the game and had all 12 of the game's corner kicks, 11 of which came in the first half. The lone save that sophomore
Charlotte Percy had to make in her third shutout of the season came in the 22nd minute.
The Oles will head across town to face nationally-ranked Carleton College at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
