Whitney Frary

Whitney Frary is in her third season as the head women's soccer coach at St. Olaf in 2021-22 after being named the program's seventh head coach on March 28, 2019.

In 2021, St. Olaf was in the mix for a spot in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs until the final day of the regular season and finished the season 6-10-1 overall and 4-7-1 in conference play. Half of the team's 10 losses and four of its seven MIAC defeats came by a single goal. Tessa Anderson picked up her second consecutive All-MIAC accolade, while Mae Guetschow and Grace Maxwell picked up Honorable Mention All-MIAC honors.

The COVID-19 pandemic wiped out the fall of Frary's second season on the Hill in 2020, but the Oles were able to play one official game and six exhibition contests in the spring of 2021. In her first season, Frary led the Oles to an 8-8-2 overall record and a 5-5-1 mark in MIAC play. Under Frary's guidance, Anderson and Claire Bash '20 were named to the MIAC All-Conference Team, while Brynne Davis was an honorable mention honoree. St. Olaf's 33 goals in 2019 marked the program's highest total since 2011.

Frary came to St. Olaf after three seasons as an assistant coach at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. In 2018, Frary was part of a coaching staff that guided the Brewers to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Vassar won at least nine games and qualified for the Liberty League Championship in each of her three seasons.

At Vassar, Frary assisted head coach Corey Holton with all aspects of the program, including daily practice planning, on-field coaching, individual coaching and player development. She also served as the program's recruiting coordinator, was involved with the program's camps and clinics, created opponent scouting reports, developed fitness programs for the team and analyzed sports performance data throughout the season.

Prior to her time at Vassar, Frary spent two seasons as an assistant coach at SUNY Cortland in Cortland, N.Y. As a member of the Red Dragons' coaching staff, she was involved in the daily planning of practices and the development of game strategy, while also scouting opponents and breaking down opponents' film.

Frary was a two-time All-American during her four-year career at William Smith College from 2009-12. The Herons won Liberty League titles in each of her four seasons and advanced to the NCAA Division III national semifinals in 2010 and 2011. A four-year All-Liberty League selection, Frary was named a Second Team All-American by the NSCAA and D3soccer.com in 2011 and a Third Team All-American by both organizations in 2012.

Following graduation, Frary worked as an assistant varsity soccer coach at Niskayuna High School in Niskayuna, N.Y. She also has experience coaching club soccer for Hyde Park Soccer Club and LaGrange Soccer Club and was involved with the New York Olympic Development Program in Upstate, N.Y.
