ST. PAUL, Minn.-
Cassie Alexander stopped 33 of 35 shots but a goal with under eight minutes to play in the third period doomed the Oles in a 2-1 loss at St. Thomas Saturday afternoon.
Â
Alexander was busy all day long, stopping nine shots in the opening period, 10 in the second and 14 in the third. The effort kept St. Olaf (0-6-0, 0-4-0 MIAC) in the game while in search of their first win of the season.
Â
St. Thomas (4-1-1, 3-0-1 MIAC) opened the scoring with a power play tally at 12:59 of the first period, coming on the heels of a five-minute major slashing penalty to St. Olaf's
Caroline Ponessa. The Tommies took that lead into the first intermission.
Â
As time dwindled in the second period it appeared as though the Oles would trail after two but with eight seconds remaining in the period,
Jane Vezina scored her first collegiate goal to knot the score at 1.
Lauren Bazzachini was credited with the lone assist at 19:52.
Â
The Tommies took over the third period, out-shooting St. Olaf 15-3, eventually netting the game-winner at 12:11 as Paige Baldwin scored to give St. Thomas the series sweep.
Â
The Oles return to action Tuesday night as they travel to take on the University of Wisconsin-River Falls at 7:05 p.m. MIAC play continues December 5 as St. Olaf hosts Gustavus Adolphus at 7:30 p.m.
