Oles strike early but fall to #4 Gustavus

NORTHFIELD, Minn.- St. Olaf scored on its first shot of the game early in the opening period but fell to No. 4 Gustavus 7-2 Friday night in Northfield.

Riley Anderson's first collegiate goal at 4:27 gave St. Olaf (0-8-0, 0-5-0 MIAC) the lead on its first shot of the game. Hannah Forliti tallied the lone assist to give the Oles the lead.

Gustavus Adolphus (6-1-1, 5-0-0 MIAC), which entered the weekend ranked fourth in the latest USCHO.com poll, received goals from Keri Pickel and Diana Draayer to take a 2-1 lead after one period. The Oles hung with the Gusties in the opening period despite a 12-5 shot disadvantage.

The game turned at the beginning of the second period as Gustavus netted two goals in the first 4:33 of the period, 2:04 apart, to take a 4-1 lead. The fourth of the game for the Gusties forced an Ole timeout.

Gustavus added on at 10:04 with a power play marker that prompted a goaltending change for St. Olaf. Sam Ubl replaced Hailey Sampson, who made 16 stops.

Annie Pumper pulled the Oles closer at 13:53 of the second with a power play tally. Sara Lind and Megan Skelly earned helpers as St. Olaf trailed 5-2 through two periods.

The Gusties stifled the Oles in the final period, surrendering just one shot on net while scoring twice. For the game, Gustavus outshot St. Olaf 36-12. Draayer and Erica Power each tallied four points each for the Gusties. Lindsay Hibbard earned the win in net for Gustavus while Ubl made 13 stops after entering in the second period for the Oles.

The teams will wrap up a home-and-home weekend series Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in St. Peter.
