Alexander stops 40 shots as Oles earn first point

ST. PETER, Minn.- Cassie Alexander made 40 saves and Annie Pumper scored a third period goal as St. Olaf tied No. 4 Gustavus 1-1 Saturday afternoon. The tie earned the first point of the season for the Oles.

Today marked the first time the St. Olaf (0-8-1, 0-5-1 MIAC) women's hockey team earned a point vs. Gustavus (6-1-2, 5-0-1 MIAC) since Feb. 18, 2012, spanning five meetings.

The Gusties held a 41-13 shot advantage but Alexander made double-digit saves in each of the first three periods and five in overtime, including help from the post early in OT. She stopped at least 32 shots for the third time in four games this season.

Gustavus got on the board first, scoring at 8:31 of the first period, to lead 1-0. That score stayed the same until Pumper's unassisted tally at 10:19 of the third period.

St. Olaf needed special teams to come up big in overtime after the Oles were assessed two penalties. The Gusties went to the PP eight seconds into OT and ended the period on one. St. Olaf killed off both and held Gustavus 0-for-4 on the power play in the game. The Oles were 0-for-3 with a player advantage.

The women's hockey team will not be in action until 2015 when they play Conneticut College in Adrian, Mich. on Jan. 2.
