ST. PETER, Minn. - The St. Olaf baseball team fell just short of earning
a season
sweep over Gustavus Adolphus
College as they lost game two to the Gusties, leaving the Oles with a 13-1,
5-3 split in a non-conference doubleheader on Monday night at Gustie Baseball
Field.
Game One: St. Olaf 13, Gustavus 5
The Oles bats exploded during a wild opening contest, driving home seven
runs over the final two innings to seal a 13-5 victory.
After Gustavus put up two in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut a 6-3
Ole lead to a single run, the St. Olaf offense took over the rest of the way,
starting with a three-hit, three-run sixth inning which put them back in
control 9-5. A Jack Schechinger RBI sacrifice-fly and a pair of unearned runs
provided the Ole scoring and capitalized on a costly Gustie error.
The Oles put the game out of reach with four more runs on five hits in the
seventh inning, coming from RBIs off of four different batters.
St. Olaf was able to score consistently, bringing home two or more runs in
five of seven innings, including two apiece in the first, third and fourth
frames, as they built an early 6-3 lead. The Oles finished game one with 15
hits overall.
Gustavus was able to get on the board with three runs on three hits in the
bottom of the first inning.
Sam Maus (4-for-5) and Kap Davis (3-for-5) were able to dominate at the top
of the batting order, combining for seven hits, seven runs and four RBI.
Starting pitcher John Connell (3-2) takes the win for the Oles, tossing
four and one-third innings, stringing out seven hits allowing four earned
runs and walking one batter. Kade Cronin allowed only one hit over two and
two-third innings of relief.
Game Two: Gustavus 3, St. Olaf 1
There were no such fireworks from the Ole batters in game two, as they
manage only four hits in a 3-1 defeat to the Gusties.
St. Olaf took an early 1-0 lead thanks to a first-inning RBI single from
Jake Mathison, but could only manage one more hit the rest of the way.
Two Gustavus runs in the third inning were all they needed to earn a split
in the doubleheader. An RBI single by Dalton Mattson and an RBI sac-fly from
Scott Benjamin in consecutive at-bats provide the Gustie offense in the
frame.
Gustavus increaded their lead to 3-1 when Josh Chatfield knocked an RBI
single up the middle in the sixth inning.
Trent Friedrich (0-2) had a strong outing on the mound for St. Olaf despite
taking the loss, tossing a complete game, giving up five hits, while striking
out two.
Dan Venn (1-0) grabs the victory for the Gusties, lasting five innings,
spreading four hits while walking one and striking out a pair.
The game two victory was the Gusties' first against the Oles in four tries
in 2014, after St. Olaf earned a 2-9, 0-1 sweep on April 15 in Northfield.
With the split the Oles move to 20-18 on the season (9-9 MIAC). They wrap
up their 2014 conference and regular season schedule on Tuesday as they host
Saint Mary's University for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. at
Carlander Stadium.
