J.J. Strnad rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns for St. Olaf, but Gustavus Adolphus College used a 23-point surge in the second quarter to hold off the visiting Oles 58-34 on Saturday at Hollingsworth Field.
Mitch Hendricks was 23-for-35 for 383 yards and five touchdowns for the Gusties, who racked up 575 yards of total offense. DaiVon Poole rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns and Jake Douglas caught nine passes for 172 yards and three touchdowns.Â
Nate Penz threw three second half touchdowns for St. Olaf in the loss. He finished the day 24-for-37 for 241 yards.Â
The Oles' 34 points are a season-high and the most since scoring 37 in week eight of the 2013 season.
St. Olaf (1-5, 0-4 MIAC) scored on two of its first three drives to lead 14-7. The Oles marched 75 yards in 10 plays on the opening drive and 78 yards, capped by Strnad's 26-yard scoring run, after a Gustavus fumble to take a one-score lead. The Gusties, however, answered with touchdowns on their next four drives and had a safety in the stretch to lead 37-14 at the half.Â
The Ole defense was led by
Seamus Walsh, who had nine of his team-high 16 tackles in the first half.Â
St. Olaf will host Carleton College next Saturday at 1 p.m.
