Oles rally, lose late to St. Mary's

NORTHFIELD, Minn.- Chad Cesarz netted a hat track, including the game-winning goal with 40 seconds to play, as Saint Mary's University beat St. Olaf in men's hockey action Saturday night at Northfield Ice Arena.

The game-winning goal came after St. Olaf (6-13-2, 4-7-1 MIAC) scored three goals in 3:02 to tie the score in the third period. Cesarz finished with three goals and Martin Gruse added assists on each of the goals for Saint Mary's (10-7-2, 4-3-2 MIAC).

The Cardinals led 1-0 after the first 20 minutes on a goal by Jed McGlasson. Saint Mary's scored twice in the second period, the first by Cesarz, and led 3-0.

St. Olaf struggled to begin the third period as the Cardinals controlled the play in the first 10 minutes. Saint Mary's was whistled for a penalty at 10:36 and the Oles capitalized. Peter Lindblad tallied a power play marker at 11:30 to get St. Olaf on the board as Drew Otto recorded the lone assist. Just 25 seconds later, Gordon Wells scored with help from Matt Kroska to cut the deficit to 3-2. Brian Hickey netted the equalizer 3:02 after the first goal and the Oles pulled even.

Chances continued the remaining five-plus minutes for St. Olaf but Cesarz scored with 40 seconds to play and an empty-net goal with 25 seconds to go to complete his hat track.

Saint Mary's held a 36-34 shot advantage and the Oles held the Cardinals to 0-for-5 on the power play. St. Olaf went 1-for-7 with the man advantage.
