NORTHFIELD, Minn.- Nate Flynn scored 1:36 into overtime and Augsburg College beat St. Olaf in men's hockey action Friday night at Northfield Ice Arena.
Flynn's goal came after St. Olaf (6-15-3, 4-9-2 MIAC) erased a 3-1 deficit with 11:00 to go, the last goal coming with 2:36 to play in the third period.
Augsburg (11-13-0, 8-7-0 MIAC) now controls its own destiny, needing a win or tie in Saturday's finale to clinch a MIAC playoff berth.
The teams skated to a scoreless first period as
Steve Papciak stopped 11 shots in the opening 20 minutes in his final home start of his college career. The Auggies struck at 10:15 of the second period and took a 1-0 lead into the third period.
Both teams traded chances in a wild third period that resulted in a combined five goals. A minute after Augsburg took a 2-0 lead,
Mark Rath put the Oles on the board at 4:56. Once again, St. Olaf responded after the Auggies took a two-goal lead. With a 3-1 score,
Steven Sherman scored 1:01 later at 10:01 and the Oles controlled the play the remainder of the third period.
Nick Marsh tipped in the game-tying goal with 2:37 to play, forcing overtime. Through regulation, Augsburg held a 38-31 shot advantage.
The Auggies wasted little time once the extra session began, outshooting St. Olaf 4-0 in OT, including Flynn's winner.
Matt Geurts, one of five seniors playing their final home game in an Ole uniform, registered three assists in the loss.
Regular season action for both teams wraps up tomorrow at 7 p.m. in Minneapolis.
