SPOKANE, Wash. - No. 12 Whitworth University held off St. Olaf 70-69 in a men's basketball game on Saturday night at Whitworth Fieldhouse.
Whitworth led by as many as 10 in the first half and by six at the break. St. Olaf kept within reach, and
Austin Korba tied the game with a three-pointer with 1:52 left. A Drew Sears bucket, St. Olaf turnover and two free throws by Kenny Love all but sealed the win for the Pirates. The Oles'
Ben Scheffley then hit a three-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin.
Kyle Roach had 20 points and Derek Issak 13 points to lead Whitworth (1-0).
Austin Majeskie had 20 points and seven rebounds to pace St. Olaf (1-2). Korba had 14,
Robert Tobroxen 12 and
Frank Delaney 10 for the Oles.Â
Whitworth won the game beyond the arc. The Pirates were 11-for-22 while St. Olaf was 9-of-25. The Oles held a 35-30 advantage in rebounds in a very clean game. St. Olaf had only 13 turnovers and Whitworth 12.
St. Olaf plays at Bethany Lutheran College next Saturday before opening MIACÂ play at home against Bethel University on Nov. 29.Â
