Men's hockey falls in overtime 4-3 to Hamline

BLAINE, Minn - Garret Schmitz scored the game winner in overtime for the Pipers as St. Olaf (0-1-0) lost the season opener to Hamline (1-0-0) 4-3 in overtime on Friday night.

The Oles struck first as Drew Otto scored the first goal of the season for the Ole men 12:10 into the first period.

The Pipers proceeded to score three unanswered goals, putting the Oles in a 3-1 deficit at the close of the second period.

The Oles kept fighting as Gordon Wells scored within the first two minutes of the third period to cut the Piper's lead to one.  Wells would score again with less then five minutes remaining in regulation to tie it up.

The comeback hopes of the Ole men were cut short when Schmitz scored the game ender 1:43 into overtime.

The loss was the fourth in a row for the Ole men against the Pipers.  The last time the Ole men beat the Pipers was in January of the 2013-14 season.  Since then, the Ole men are 0-6-1 against them.

Next up for the Ole men is a match tomorrow night against the University of St. Thomas.
