NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Saint John's University posted a pair of MIAC baseball wins over St. Olaf on Thursday, defeating the Oles 8-5 in game one before a 5-4 victory in game two.
Game One: SJU 8, St. Olaf 5
Max Jackson's two-run homer in the sixth inning broke a 5-5 tie to propel SJU to the game one win.
The Oles'
Ben Arndt was 3-for-4 with three RBIs while
Jake Mathison and
Travis McDonald had two hits each in the loss.
SJU scored in every inning but the third. The Oles scored three in the bottom of the fourth, punctuated by a
Ryan Iverson homer and a two-run single by Arndt, to take a 5-4 lead. The Johnnies answered in the fifth to tie the game to set up Jackson's go-ahead homer.
Game Two: SJU 5, St. Olaf 4
A ninth-inning RBI-single by Derek Schiebel plated Jackson, who had a one-out double, as SJU broke a 4-4 tie and held on for the win. Schiebel had three RBIs and Wyatt Ulrich was 2-for-5 for the Johnnies (19-8, 9-3 MIAC).
Sam Pressman went 2-for-4 for the Oles (9-16, 2-8 MIAC), while
Luke Dahl had a two-run single in the first inning. St. Olaf scored three times in the frame to take a 3-1 lead. The Oles added a run in the second, but did not score the remainder of the game.
SJU used five pitchers, and its final four went a combined five innings, allowing just one hit and a walk. Alex Kendall picked up the win after working a perfect eighth inning.
