Rewers' 20 kills not enough for volleyball against Saint Benedict

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Junior Lauren Rewers had 10 of her season-high 20 kills in the third set alone, but the College of Saint Benedict halted the St. Olaf College volleyball team's winning streak at seven matches by defeating the Oles 25-22, 25-13, 20-25, 25-22 on Friday evening at Skoglund Center.

After Saint Benedict (21-5, 8-0 MIAC) won the first two sets, Rewers sparked a rally in the third set for St. Olaf (20-6, 4-4 MIAC) to send the match to a fourth. The Oles threatened to send the match to a deciding set by taking a 20-17 lead late in the fourth, but the Blazers won eight of the final 10 points to end St. Olaf's winning streak and extend its own to streak to eight in a row.

Rewers' 20 kills were one more than the 19 she had in a five-set loss to Muhlenberg College on Sept. 29 and she added 10 kills for her fifth double-double of the season. First-year Katelyn Lannom and senior Alison Curry each contributed 10 kills for the Oles.

Sophomore Lexi Wall posted her sixth double-double of the year with 44 assists and 15 digs, while junior Haley Langeslag made 15 digs for St. Olaf. Langeslag was one of four Oles with double-digit digs, along with Wall, Rewers and sophomore Summer Reid, who had 13.

Madison Weiss led Saint Benedict with 13 kills and six total blocks, while twin sister Hunter Weiss added 11 kills and five total blocks. Lauren Matthews had four solo blocks on a six-block night to go with 10 kills. Katie Koch registered 42 assists and nine digs, while Liz Schultz and Haley LaValle each recorded 17 digs for the Blazers.

St. Olaf led 13-9 midway through the first set before a 5-0 run gave CSB its first lead of the evening. Back-to-back kills by Curry broke a 19-19 tie, giving the Oles a two-point advantage only for the Blazers to win the next five points to go ahead 22-19. From there, the teams alternated points with CSB closing out the set on a Madison Weiss kill.

Saint Benedict broke open the second set with a 6-1 run to turn an 11-8 edge into a 17-9 lead. Later, the Blazers won seven-of-eight points to bring up set point at 24-12 on their way to a two-sets-to-none lead.

With St. Olaf trailing 11-10 in the third, Rewers provided four kills during an 8-0 run that swung the set in the Oles' favor. Rewers accounted for 10 of St. Olaf's 17 kills in the set, with her 10 kills matching CSB's total for the set. After being held in check for the first two sets, the Oles' hit .256 in the third, compared to .098 for Saint Benedict to extend the match.

Midway through the fourth, the Oles went on a 8-1 run on the serves of Rewers and Emily Jarnigan to open up a 13-9 lead. Saint Benedict battled back to go on top, 15-14, after a 6-1 run of its own, but St. Olaf responded by winning six of the next eight to take the lead back, 20-17. Down by three, the Blazers won eight of the final 10 points of the match to set up a matchup of unbeaten MIAC teams on Saturday against No. 10-ranked Gustavus in St. Peter.

St. Olaf hosts Concordia College (Minn.) on Saturday, Oct. 20 on Parent Day at Skoglund Center. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
