Bash, Schoustra lift women's soccer past UW-Stout

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team scored three times in less than five minutes late in the first half on its way to a 5-1 victory over UW-Stout in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

Junior Claire Bash posted her first-career two-goal game, junior Mackenzie Schoustra tallied a goal and an assist and junior Eileen Healy netted her first-career goal for St. Olaf (7-2-1). First-year goalkeeper Rachel Nelson recorded her first collegiate victory in the win over UW-Stout (2-8-1), as the Oles outshot the Blue Devils by a 31-5 margin in the game.

After a scoreless opening 35 minutes, Bash opened the scoring, nodding in a Rose Sandell corner to begin the three-goal outburst. Just 36 seconds later, Schoustra, the reigning Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Athlete of the Week, scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season to double the Oles' lead. After being played in down the left channel, Schoustra cut into the box from the left before cutting the ball back onto her left foot and finding the roof of the net from inside the penalty spot.

Senior Emily Lecy grabbed St. Olaf's third goal in less than four minutes in the 40th minute off an assist from Schoustra. Schoustra beat her defender up the left side in the box, cut the ball back onto her right foot and found Lecy unmarked at the penalty spot for a right-footed finish into the lower-right corner.

Schoustra's three-point afternoon was her fourth-straight multi-point performance and her sixth of the season. Her nine goals this season are second-most in the MIAC as are her 23 points. The junior has scored in four-straight games, including scoring the game-winner in all four games of St. Olaf's four-game winning streak, and has six goals over that span. The last Ole to score in four consecutive games was Lindsay Howard from Sept. 26 - Oct. 7, 2009 and she also scored six times over the four-game stretch.

The Oles added to their lead early in the second half on Bash's second goal of the game. Junior Katie Brumley brought down a cross from Sandell outside the arc at the top of the box and laid the ball back for Bash, who fired a left-footed shot over the UW-Stout goalkeeper from 25 yards out to make it 4-0 in the 50th minute.

Bella Pedlar got UW-Stout on the board in the 60th minute, collecting a loose ball at the top of the box and picking out the top-left corner to leave Nelson with no chance. Nelson made two saves on the afternoon to collect her first collegiate victory.

In the 87th minute, Healy capped the scoring, finishing off a breakaway into the lower-left corner of the net from the top of the box after being fed through the middle by first-year Haley Hoffmann.

St. Olaf took 14 of the game's 17 shots on goal, with Pedlar's goal coming on UW-Stout's only shot of the second half. Claudia Anderson suffered the loss with three saves in the opening 56:38 before being replaced by Melissa Ferrise, who made six saves in the final 33:22.

The Oles seek their fifth-straight victory on Saturday, Oct. 6 when they travel to Macalester College for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
