No. 10 Gustavus too much for volleyball on the road

ST. PETER, Minn. – Junior Lauren Rewers recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 16 kills and 11 digs for the St. Olaf College volleyball team in a three-set (25-23, 25-20, 25-21) defeat at No. 10-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) match on Thursday evening at Gus Young Court.

Rewers' 16 kills were a match high for St. Olaf (13-5, 3-3 MIAC), which started quickly in the first set before No. 10 Gustavus (15-2, 6-0 MIAC) rallied to grab the opener on its way its seventh-straight victory. Rewers hit .375 in the match for the Oles.

Senior Alison Curry narrowly missed joining Rewers in double figures with nine kills while hitting .364 for the night. Junior Haley Langeslag reached double digits in digs for the 16th time in 18 matches this season with a match-high 17, while sophomore Lexi Wall handed out 36 assists and was in on three blocks.

In the opening set, St. Olaf surged out to a 9-1 lead that included six kills and no errors on its first nine swings to prompt a Gustavus timeout with the Oles up 7-1. The Gusties were forced to call their second timeout midway through the set trailing 14-6. Gustavus mounted a rally to climb to within a point at 20-19 and 21-20, but Curry kills on both occasions kept the Oles on top.

After Gustavus tied the set for the first time at 22-22, a service error gave the lead right back to St. Olaf, but the Gusties claimed the final three points. Kate Holtan, who recorded seven kills in the set, had back-to-back kills for Gustavus to bring up set point before Nora Holtan hit an ace out of an Ole timeout to give the hosts the opening set.

St. Olaf led 5-3 in the early stages of the second prior to a 7-1 run that saw Gustavus take a lead it would hold onto for the remainder of the set. Trailing 16-11, the Oles closed the gap to two, 19-17, following a timeout but could get no closer as the Gusties claimed a two-set lead despite seven kills from Rewers in the set.

Gustavus broke a 7-7 tie in the third with a 6-2 run to go ahead 13-9. The Oles gradually chipped away at the Gustie lead, whittling the lead to one, 22-21, after Curry had back-to-back kills and a solo block on successive points. Curry's solo block was the final point St. Olaf would win, however, as Gustavus won the final three points to end the match.

Two-time reigning MIAC Player of the Year Nora Holtan posted 29 assists, nine digs and six kills for the Gusties, while sister Kate paced the hosts with 13 kills.

St. Olaf travels to Mankato on Saturday, Oct. 6 to face UW-Superior at 4 p.m. and host Bethany Lutheran College at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6.
