RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The St. Olaf College women's basketball team was edged by UW-River Falls, 67-61, in a non-conference matchup at the UW-River Falls Tournament on Friday evening at Don Page Arena.
Britta Koenen posted a career-high 21 points and seven rebounds for St. Olaf (0-2), but UW-River Falls (3-1) took the lead for the first time with 6:26 remaining in the game. St. Olaf and UW-River Falls recorded five lead changes in the fourth quarter until Jenna Zeman sank a pair of free throws that gave the Falcons the lead, 58-57, with 2:07 remaining in the contest as the Falcons would remain on top.
Ella Skrien posted 11 points and five rebounds and
Makenna Ash added six points and 15 rebounds for the Oles.
Keegan Mulvihill finished with 10 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists.
St. Olaf jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first eight points of the game and holding the Falcons scoreless for the first 3:15. The Oles continued to extend their lead in the first quarter as Skrien sank a three-pointer to give St. Olaf a 18-6 lead.
A three-pointer from the Falcons early in the second quarter cut the lead to eight, but St. Olaf responded with a basket from
Sydney Beard making the score 20-12 with eight minutes remaining in the half. The Oles took the largest lead of the half at 31-16 when Skrien finished a layup with less than two minutes remaining in the half.
UW-River Falls climbed within three points after the Falcons sank a three-pointer, making the score 41-38 with 1:49 remaining in the third quarter. The Oles answered with just over a minute remaining in the quarter with a layup from Mulvihill to extend the lead to five.
In the fourth quarter, UW-River Falls tied the score 43-43 with three-pointer from Anna Rollag, but St. Olaf responded with a layup from Koenen to regain the lead with 8:41 remaining.
St. Olaf took its largest lead of the fourth quarter with a basket from
Camryn Scott, making the score 54-50 with 3:33 to go, but UW-River Falls sank back-to-back three-pointers making the score 56-54. Koenen answered the Falcons' run with an Ole three-pointer to take back the lead, but St. Olaf was unable to keep the lead as UW-River Falls sank two free throws on the next possession and held the lead for the remainder of the game.
St. Olaf is back to action Saturday, Nov. 17 in its second game at the UW-River Falls Classic against UW-Stout at 1 p.m.
