NORTHFIELD, Minn. – First year
Tyler Bump scored his first-career goal and added an assist but visiting Saint John's University defeated the St. Olaf College men's hockey team, 5-2, in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Friday night at Northfield Ice Arena.
Bump's first collegiate goal tied the score at 1-1 late in the opening period for St. Olaf (3-3-1, 1-1-1 MIAC), but Saint John's (4-2-1, 2-1-0 MIAC) scored the game's next three goals to pull away. The game was the Oles' final contest at Northfield Ice Arena before they move into their new on-campus arena in January.
After Robb Statuz had given the Johnnies the lead with a power-play goal at 12:15 of the first period, Bump evened it up at 1-1 at 17:43 off assists from
Tobias Gabrielsen and
Connor Smith. From the right boards, Gabrielsen found a streaking Bump up the middle of the ice and Bump got a backhand shot through the legs of Andrew Lindgren. Smith's assist was his first point of the season.
Saint John's broke open a 1-1 tie with two goals in the second half of the second period, beginning with Stautz's second power-play goal of the game at 12:18. Joe Chitwood extended the Johnnies' lead to 3-1 after two, scoring at 16:36 of the second.
Evan Okeley extended the Johnnies' lead to three, 4-1, at 3:46 of the third before
Kyle Rimbach made it a two-goal game with his team-high third goal of the season. Bump and
Chris Koziel earned assists on Rimbach's goal at 9:22, as Rimbach jammed in a rebound after Bump's initial shot was saved just nine seconds into a St. Olaf power play.
Kyle Wagner added an empty-net goal for Saint John's with 1:39 to go to end any thought of a late St. Olaf rally. Reigning MIAC Men's Hockey Athlete of the Week
Noah Parker made 44 saves for the Oles for his fourth 40-save effort of the season, while Lindgren made 11 stops for the Johnnies.
Saint John's outshot St. Olaf by a 49-13 margin in the game that included 19 combined minor penalties.
The two teams complete their weekend series on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 4 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
