Women's soccer drops opener to UW-Stevens Point

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - In the first-ever game on the new turf at Rolf Mellby Field, the St. Olaf women's soccer team fell to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 2-1, in a non-conference contest Friday afternoon in its 2018 season opener.

UW-Stevens Point (1-0-0) opened up a quick 2-0 lead in the first 13:03 of the game on goals by Jaqueline Aleman and Maddy Hardyman. St. Olaf (0-1-0) got one of the goals back when first-year midfielder Greta Anderson scored a little over eight minutes later to make it a one-goal game but that was as close as the Oles would get as the Pointers held on.

The Pointers broke the deadlock in the 12th minute when Hardyman set up Aleman for the opening goal and, two minutes and one second later, Hardyman scored a goal of her own from Gracie Wendels to double the visitors' advantage.

Just 8:24 later, Anderson fired the ball into the roof of the net from outside the box after receiving the ball from junior Mackenzie Schoustra, who collected an assist. Schoustra had nine shots in the game, seven of which were on goal, including a close-range shot inside the final five minutes that Lexi Pawlowski saved onto the crossbar and out for a corner kick.

Pawlowski made 13 saves in the win for the Pointers, while sophomore Brynne Davis had seven saves for the Oles. St. Olaf out-shot UW-Stevens Point by an 18-12 margin in the game, including a 14-9 advantage in shots on goal.

St. Olaf travels to Decorah, Iowa to face Luthern on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 5 p.m.
