Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Bash's goal helps women's soccer to 1-1 tie at Luther

DECORAH, Iowa - Junior midfielder Claire Bash scored the game-tying goal in the 75th minute, as the St. Olaf College women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie with Luther College on the road on Wednesday evening in non-conference action.

With St. Olaf (0-1-1) trailing Luther (0-0-3) by a 1-0 margin, Bash brought the Oles level by scoring on a long-range shot to the top-left corner from 35 yards out in the middle of the field. St. Olaf narrowly missed going ahead on two occasions in the closing minutes of regulation, hitting the cross bar twice in the final six-plus minutes of regulation, and again early in the second overtime, as the two teams eventually settled for a tie.

It was just the second tie in 23 meetings between the two programs, who were meeting for the 15th season out of the last 16.

After a scoreless first half, Luther's Hailey Sanchez grabbed the game's first goal in the 55th minute, poking the ball over the line from close range after pouncing on a loose ball in front of the goal. Hannah Christopher assisted on Sanchez's first goal of the season, which came shortly after Marta Springer hit the outside of the right post when holding off a defender from just outside the six-yard box.

Bash denied Luther its first victory of the season a little over 20 minutes later, collecting the ball from 35 yards out and firing the ball over Kennedy Bergren and into the top corner of net for the fourth goal of her St. Olaf career. All three of Bash's prior goals were game-winners.

With both teams in search of a goal that would have given them their first victories of the season, the Oles came the closest to grabbing the win late on. In the 84th minute, sophomore defender Rose Sandell sent in a corner from the left that hit traffic in front of the goal, caromed off the cross bar and was cleared by the Norse.

In the closing seconds, junior forward Mackenzie Schoustra, who scored twice against the Norse last season, came inches from giving St. Olaf the win, but her shot from just outside the box was pushed onto the bar by Bergren. Senior forward Emily Lecy corralled the loose ball, but Bergren charged out of the goal to cut down Lecy's angle and made the save.

Luther came the closest to scoring in the first overtime when Springer fired the ball across goal and just wide from a sharp angle on the left with just over a minute remaining. Early in the second overtime, Schoustra again came close to winning it for the Oles when her left-footed shot from the top of the box hit the top of the bar and went behind for a goal kick.

St. Olaf outshot Luther, 12-9, in the opening half, although the Norse enjoyed a 5-4 edge in shots on goal before the break. The best chance of the half fell to first-year Greta Anderson just a couple minute, but she could not get enough on a close-range shot that rolled into the arms of Bergren. Anderson was looking for her second goal in as many games to start her collegiate career.

Shots for the game ended 21-19 in favor of St. Olaf, thanks largely to Schoustra's 10 shots. Brynne Davis made six saves in goal for the Oles, while Bergren finished with eight for the Norse.

St. Olaf travels to Oshkosh, Wis. for two games this weekend, starting off with matchup at UW-Oshkosh on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 1 p.m.
