NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College volleyball team recorded its eighth-straight victory and posted its ninth sweep in 13 matches this season by defeating Hamline University 25-14, 25-19, 25-18 on Wednesday evening in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action at Skoglund Center.
First-year setter
Brynne Gray recorded the first double-double of her young collegiate career with 42 assists, 13 digs and six aces for St. Olaf (12-1, 2-0 MIAC). The sweep of Hamline (6-5, 0-2 MIAC) extended the Oles' winning streak to eight matches, the longest since the 2001 team started the season with 15-straight victories. The 12-1 start to a season is also the best for St. Olaf since 2001.
Junior
Lauren Rewers tallied a match-high 12 kills, reaching double figures for the ninth time this season and the fifth time in the last six matches. Sophomore
Summer Reid joined Rewers in double figures with 11 kills, while seniors
Megan Grimes and
Alison Curry contributed nine and eight kills, respectively.
Gray assisted on 42 of St. Olaf's 48 kills, setting career highs in assists, digs and aces during the victory. The Oles hit .411 over the first two sets before cooling off in the third, but still finished at a .290 clip for the match.
Junior
Haley Langeslag posted a match-high 17 digs for the Oles, giving her double-digit digs in 12 of the team's 13 matches this season. Langeslag has had at least nine digs in each match this fall.
With the score tied at 6-6 early in the first set, Gray hit four-straight aces to put the Oles on top and prompt a Hamline timeout. The run continued out of the stoppage, as St. Olaf won nine-straight points in total to take a 14-6 lead. The Oles led by at least five points the rest of the set and finished the opening set hitting .429. Gray had 15 assists and five aces in the first set alone.
St. Olaf continued its torrid hitting in the second set, hitting .393 to go up two sets to none. Trailing 10-8, St. Olaf won eight consecutive points, beginning with back-to-back kills by Grimes, to take a 16-10 advantage. The closest the Pipers would get the rest of the set was four, 17-13, but a Reid kill and back-to-back attack errors quickly put the Oles back ahead by seven. Reid had six of her 11 kills in the match in the second set.
Curry and Rewers combined for 11 of St. Olaf's 18 kills in the third set, as the Oles staged a late rally to close out the sweep. With Hamline leading 17-15, St. Olaf won nine consecutive points to bring up match point and, after the Pipers snapped the run of nine-straight points for the Oles, Rewers sealed the match with her 12th kill of the evening. Rewers had four kills during the decisive 9-0 run.
The match was St. Olaf's Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night at Skoglund Center, as each St. Olaf student-athlete presented a faculty or staff member with a card before the match during starting lineups.
The Oles play their next 11 matches away from home, beginning with a trip to Macalester on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 3 p.m.
