Women's soccer blanks Saint Benedict, 1-0

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – A 38th-minute goal from junior Mackenzie Schoustra lifted the St. Olaf College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at the College of Saint Benedict in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Saturday afternoon at CSB Soccer Field.

Schoustra scored her team-high fourth goal of the season in the latter stages of the first half for St. Olaf (4-2-1, 2-1-0 MIAC) and sophomore goalkeeper Brynne Davis only had to make four saves to record her third shutout of the season. The 1-0 victory marked the fourth-straight season the Oles have defeated Saint Benedict (2-5-0, 1-2-0 MIAC) by a single goal.

Eight of the last nine meetings between the Oles and Blazers have been decided by one goal or ended in a tie. The victory was St. Olaf's third 1-0 victory of the season.

Schoustra provided the lone goal of the game in the 38th minute, firing a long shot from the left side of the goal that curved into the right side of the net. The junior's goal was her third game-winning goal of the season and gave Schoustra 11 points (four goals, three assists) through seven games this season. Schoustra's 11 points are tied for third-most in the MIAC.

Saint Benedict nearly found a tying goal in the 77th minute when Nicole Newman hit the post. Davis had two saves in each half for the Oles to improve to 4-2-1 this fall.

St. Olaf outshot Saint Benedict by a 17-15 margin in the game, including a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal.

The Oles head to St. Peter on Wednesday, Sept. 26 for a 4 p.m. matchup with Gustavus Adolphus.
