Schoustra's two goals propel women's soccer past Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. – Goals in each half from junior Mackenzie Schoustra lifted the St. Olaf College women's soccer team to a 2-1 road victory over Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) foe Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday afternoon at Gustie Soccer Field.

After Gustavus (4-4-1, 1-2-1 MIAC) tied the game at 1-1 in the 67th minute, Schoustra netted her fourth game-winning goal of the season for St. Olaf (5-2-1, 3-1-0 MIAC) a little less than eight minutes later. The junior's two-goal performance was her second of the season and her six goals this season are third-most in the MIAC.

After St. Olaf had a couple chances to score in the opening 15 minutes, Schoustra put the Oles on top in the 17th minute with an unassisted goal. From about 30 yards out, the junior was given time and unleashed a shot into the top-right corner of the net, leaving Abby Goodno with no chance to keep it out.

St. Olaf had three shots on goal in the final five minutes of the first half but was forced to settle for a 1-0 halftime lead after outshooting Gustavus 9-4 in the opening 45 minutes.

The Gusties generated a chance eight minutes into the second half, but sophomore goalkeeper Brynne Davis rushed off her line to prevent a Gustavus attacker from getting on the end of a through ball. In the 68th minute, the hosts tied the game when Lauren Johnson picked out the same corner as Schoustra from the top of the box.

Schoustra threatened to break the 1-1 scoreline in the 73rd minute, but saw her left-footed shot from the middle of the box hit the top of the cross bar. Less than three minutes later, however, the junior provided the game-winner with a simple tap-in near the right post after senior Emily Lecy beat a rushing Goodno to a through ball from sophomore Annie Reichhoff near the top of the box and poked the ball over to Schoustra.

Gustavus did not generate a shot following Schoustra's second goal of the afternoon, as St. Olaf avenged a pair of losses to the Gusties last season, including a 2-0 defeat in the quarterfinals of the MIAC Playoffs. Four of the Oles' five victories this season have come in one-goal games.

The Oles doubled up the Gusties in shots in the game, 16-8, and got 11 shots on goal compared to five for the hosts. Goodno finished with nine saves for Gustavus, while Davis had a four-save afternoon.

St. Olaf hosts Hamline University in the team's Alumni Recognition Game on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. at Rolf Mellby Field.
