APPLETON, Wis. – The St. Olaf College volleyball team recorded its fourth and fifth sweeps of the season by cruising past Ripon College and Beloit College in three sets on Saturday at the ACM Tournament on the campus of Lawrence University.
In the opener, St. Olaf (6-1) hit .436 as a team to post its highest hitting percentage since hitting .444 in a sweep of Hamline on Sept. 17, 2010, as the Oles surged past Ripon (3-4) by scores of 25-20, 25-18, 25-14. Later in the day, St. Olaf cooled off a bit but still hit .333 to post a 25-11, 25-12, 25-19 victory over Beloit (2-6).
With 19 kills over the two matches, senior
Megan Grimes moved into 10th place in recorded program history in kills with 884 for her career. Grimes entered the day just three kills behind Melissa Burch (2010-12) on the program's kill list, which dates back to 1991.

St. Olaf his at least .393 in all four sets and had just 11 errors on 78 swings in the match to sweep Ripon. Junior
Lauren Rewers paced the Oles with 13 kills on 20 swings while hitting .550.

Katelyn Lannom added seven of her own for St. Olaf. Sophomore
Lexi Wall recorded assists on 39 of St. Olaf's 45 kills, with
Haley Langeslag leading the defensive effort with 16 digs.
Ripon led the opening set 11-8 before St. Olaf won six-straight points, two on back-to-back aces by Lannom, to take its first lead of the match. Later in the set, Reid and
Morgan Marxer accounted for all four kills during a stretch of four consecutive points for the Oles that gave St. Olaf an 18-13 lead that it would protect for the rest of the opening set.
After falling behind early in the first, the Oles raced out to a 5-1 lead in the second and never looked back. Lannom had two kills and was in on a block with Rewers to boost the St. Olaf lead to 14-7 midway through the set. Ripon got as close at 17-14 later in the second, but the Oles won five of the next six points to rebuild a comfortable advantage.
St. Olaf used runs of 4-0, 5-0 and 4-0 to open up an 18-7 lead in the third. The Oles led by as many as 13, 21-8, before the Red Hawks won five-straight points, but St. Olaf got blocks on three of the final five points of the match to finish off the win. The Oles hit .545 with just one error in the third and did not allow Ripon to record a single block in the victory.

Later in the day, the Oles held Beloit to a -.013 hitting percentage and got 22 combined kills from Grimes and Reid to close out a 2-0 day. Reid tallied a match-high 12 kills, while Grimes added 10 for St. Olaf.
Rewers had seven kills on 13 swings, nine digs and three aces for St. Olaf, which got six kills on eight errorless swings from senior
Alison Curry. Langeslag reached double figures in digs for the fourth-straight match and sixth time in seven matches this season, finishing with 13. Wall made it four-straight matches with at least 37 assists, finishing with 37.
No Buccaneer had more than four kills for Beloit, as St. Olaf held the Buccaneers to 16 kills with 17 errors for the match.
St. Olaf broke open the opening set by winning seven consecutive points to take a 20-10 lead behind the serve of Rewers. Rewers had two aces during the decisive run that was also aided by two kills from Reid.
After trailing 6-4 in the second, the Oles surrendered just six points the rest of the set to run away with the set, 25-12. Down two early, St. Olaf again used a 7-0 run, this time on Reid's serve, to take command as they took a two-sets-to-none lead.
Beloit held a slim 11-10 lead in the third before St. Olaf won six of the next seven points to go ahead 16-12. Four different Oles had kills during the stretch that was part of a run of 10 points out of 12 for St. Olaf. After taking a 12-11 lead on an
Emily Jarnigan kill, St. Olaf held the lead the rest of the set.
Day two of the tournament will see St. Olaf take on Lake Forest College at 10 a.m. and host Lawrence University at 12 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9.
