Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Men's hockey edged by UW-River Falls on last-second goal

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – UW-River Falls scored a pair of third-period goals, including the game-winner with just three seconds remaining, to defeat the St. Olaf College men's hockey team, 2-1, in a non-conference matchup on Friday evening at Hunt Arena.

A power-play goal from junior Tuukka Totro at 11:50 of the second period put St. Olaf (3-9-1) ahead 1-0 after two periods, but UW-River Falls (7-6-3) tied the game midway through the third and got a game-winning power-play goal from Cayden Cahill with three seconds left in the period to snatch the come-from-behind victory.

After a scoreless first 31-plus minutes of the game, Totro broke the deadlock with his first goal of the season at 11:50 of the second off assists from first year Tyler Bump and junior Andrew Willner. Willner's assist was his first point of the season, while Totro's tally gave the Oles a power-play goal in three-straight games.

In the third, junior Paul Stehr nearly doubled St. Olaf's lead, hitting the pipe right before UW-River Falls' Mike Sauer took a penalty to put the Oles on the power play. Not long after his penalty expired, Sauer brought the Falcons even at 1-1 with Eddie Matsushima earning an assist.

A St. Olaf penalty with 1:51 remaining put UW-River Falls on what proved to be the decisive power play. The Oles nearly got the game to overtime, but Cahill netted a power-play goal from Christian Hausinger at 19:57 to give the hosts the win.

St. Olaf held a 29-28 advantage in shots on goal in the game. Senior Eric Hancock suffered the loss despite a 26-save night, while Joe Marcouiller posted 28 saves for UW-River Falls.

The Oles face their fourth-straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) foe when they take on No. 3 UW-Eau Claire on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.
