ST. PAUL, Minn. – In the second overtime game in as many days between the two teams, the St. Olaf College women's hockey team suffered a 3-2 defeat to St. Catherine University to conclude their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) series on Saturday afternoon at Drake Arena.
First year
Jackie LaFaive scored her fourth goal in the last three games to put St. Olaf (0-12-2, 0-6-2 MIAC) ahead, 1-0, after one, but St. Catherine (4-10-1, 1-6-1 MIAC) rallied with two second period goals from Brede Postier in the second. A goal by junior
Michaela Crowley helped the Oles send the game to overtime before Laken Muller won it for the Wildcats just 41 seconds into the extra session.
LaFaive got on the score sheet for the third-straight game at 8:51 of the first period, scoring off an assist from sophomore
Bridget Barnett to give the Oles a 1-0 lead after one period. All four of LaFaive's goals this season have come over the last three games, while Barnett recorded her second assist in three games.
After scoring twice in a 2-2 tie the night before, Brede Postier netted two goals in the second half of the second period to lift the Wildcats to a 2-1 lead at the second intermission. Her first goal came shorthanded at 10:26 and the second came with just 44 seconds remaining in the period.
Crowley knotted the game at 2-2 at 9:17 of the third period with her second goal of the season, as senior
Molly Andrews earned her third assist of the year. The Oles got their seventh power play of the game with 7:15 remaining, but the Wildcats killed off all seven of their penalties in the game to push the game to overtime, where Muller won it from Postier and Ashlyn Rakos.
Junior
Sam Klemann made 34 saves in the loss for St. Olaf, giving her five-straight games with at least that many saves. Elizabeth Kubicek recorded the win for St. Catherine with a 24-save afternoon.
The Oles host nationally-ranked Hamline University on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. at St. Olaf Ice Arena before facing the Pipers at TRIA Rink in St. Paul the next day at 2 p.m.
