Nate Albers each tallied a season-high 21 points, but the St. Olaf College men's basketball team fell in overtime to Augsburg University, 96-89, in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) contest Saturday afternoon at Skoglund Center.
Augsburg's (12-4, 8-3) Booker Coplin made a layup with eight seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score, after a pair of missed free throws from St. Olaf (8-8, 7-4), and was fouled as he made the basket. Coplin missed the free throw, and the Oles had a last-second look at the end of regulation, but could not get it to go, sending the game into overtime.
Augsburg outscored St. Olaf 12-5 in overtime, including 5-of-6 shooting from the free throw line in the final 1:11 of the game. Coplin sank a three-pointer 19 seconds into overtime, but the Oles answered with a jumper from sophomore
Dominic Bledsoe. The Auggies and the Oles traded baskets in the next two possessions before Kevin McKiernan was sent to the line and gave Augsburg a four-point lead, and they would remain on top for the remainder of the game.
Diggins posted 21 points, three rebounds and two assists for the Oles and Albers registered 21 points and seven rebounds. Senior
Austin Korba added a double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds, and senior
Frank Delaney reached double figures with 12-points and five rebounds.
In the first half, Augsburg took an 11-2 lead after a three-pointer from McKiernan and 17:57 remaining in the half. The Oles answered with a 10-2 run and cut the deficit to one point after senior

With 8:53 to go in the half, a layup from Coplin made the score 25-15, in favor of the Auggies, but St. Olaf came back with a 20-8 run and took a two-point lead after a steal from Diggins that resulted in a three-pointer from Albers.
Augsburg regained the lead and extended it to four points with 49 seconds remaining in the half, but a three-point play from Korba brought the Oles within one heading into the half.
At 16:11 in the second half, St. Olaf took the lead and held it for the next 10:07. The Oles jumped ahead to as much as 11 points after Delaney sank a three-pointer from the top of the key. Augsburg answered with a 10-2 run and came within three-points with 7:58 to go in regulation.
The Oles took a six-point lead after Korba sank a pair of free throws with 2:24 to go in the second half, but Augsburg scored the next five points to make the score 81-80, in favor of St. Olaf..
With 1:14 remaining in regulation, a free throw from Augsburg brought the Auggies within one, but the Oles answered with jumper from Albers to regain a three-point lead. In the next possession, Coplin made a jumper to cut St. Olaf's lead to one.
After an Augsburg turnover, the Auggies were forced to foul and send the Oles to the line, where St. Olaf missed both and Coplin capitalized on the opportunity, scoring in the final eight seconds. The Oles had a last-second look in regulation, but could not get it to go.
Coplin sank a three-pointer 19 seconds into overtime, and St. Olaf answered with a basket from Bledsoe. The Auggies scored in back-to-back possessions and took a five-point lead at 91-86, with 3:21 to go.
Scheffley sank a jumper and brought Oles within three, but Augsburg sank 5-of-6 free throws in the final 1:11 to secure the victory.
St. Olaf outrebounded Augsburg, 46-36, but the Auggies shot 49.2 percent from the floor and sank 11 three-pointers compared to 43.5 percent shooting from the Oles.. The 45 minute contest saw six lead changes and the game was tied six different times.
The Oles look to bounce back on Monday, Jan. 21, as they host Hamline in a MIAC contest at Skoglund Center, beginning at 7 p.m.
