Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Korba reaches 1,000-point milestone, men's basketball falls at Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. – Senior Austin Korba scored the 1,000th point of his career for the St. Olaf College men's basketball team, but host Gustavus Adolphus College shot 56.0 percent from the field to down the Oles, 82-70, on Wednesday night at Gus Young Court.

Korba entered the night needing 15 points to reach the 1,000-point milestone and finished with a game-high 19 points for St. Olaf (9-9, 8-5 MIAC) to become the 22nd Ole since 1972-73 to record 1,000 points. Gustavus (8-10, 5-8 MIAC) never trailed in the game and shot 66.7 percent  (16-for-24) in the opening half on its way to avenging a last-second loss to St. Olaf on Dec. 12.

In addition to Korba's 19 points and six rebounds, sophomore Dominic Bledsoe and junior Nate Albers each had 14 points. Bledsoe added six rebounds, three assists and three stealing while shooting 6-for-12 from the field, while Albers made three three-pointers off the bench.

Ten players scored in the game for Gustavus, led by 15 points from Spencer Tollefson. Riley Sharbono and Isaac Douglas each tallied 11 points, with Douglas shooting 4-for-4 from the field, including a 3-for-3 night from behind the arc. The Gusties got 37 points off their bench, with Vannis Smith and Charlie Krambeer contributing nine apiece.

Gustavus shot a blistering 66.7 percent (16-for-24) in the opening half and limited St. Olaf to a 23.5 percent clip (8-for-34) to take a 40-21 lead into the break. The Gusties led 15-6 before an Albers three-pointer with 10:50 left in the opening half made it just a six-point lead, but Gustavus responded by making five-straight shots as part of a 12-2 run to take a 27-11 advantage with 7:20 to go before the half.

A three-pointer by Korba with 5:17 left in the half got the Oles within 13, 29-16, but the Gusties took a 19-point lead into the locker room after nine players scored in the opening half.

Gustavus led by as many as 21 points early in the second half and continued to hold a 19-point lead with 6:26 to play after a three-pointer by Krambeer. St. Olaf closed the gap to 12, 65-53, with 4:34 remaining with a 7-0 run.

With 2:15 to go, Korba hit a pair of free throws to bring the Oles within single digits, 70-61, and reach the 1,000-point milestone, but that was as close as St. Olaf would get. Korba had 16 of his 19 points in the second half, while Bledsoe (12) and Beck (nine) combined for 21 points after the break.
