Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

No. 5 Augsburg downs men's hockey with two third-period goals

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Fifth-ranked Augsburg University scored twice in the final 10 minutes to break a 2-2 tie and defeat the St. Olaf College men's hockey team on Saturday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

St. Olaf (4-12-2, 2-6-2 MIAC) twice held the lead in the first 33:45 of the game on goals from senior Chris Koziel and first year Mitch Dolter, but Augsburg (16-3-2, 10-1-1 MIAC) rallied to tie the game after two periods. In the third, Alex Rodriguez scored his MIAC-leading 17th goal of the season at 10:05 and Gavin Holland added an insurance goal 2:45 later as the Auggies completed the weekend sweep.

With the game scoreless inside the final two minutes of the opening period, Koziel broke the deadlock with his fourth goal of the season at 18:04 off assists from Caleb Callaway and Tyler Bump. Callaway's assist was his first of two on the night, while Bump's gave him a point in five of the Oles' last seven games.

Augsburg hit back at 7:46 of the second period when Austin Dollimer scored for the second-straight night to knot the score at 1-1. Just under six minutes later, Dolter put the Oles back on top, 2-1, with a shorthanded goal, his team-leading fifth goal of the season. The tally was St. Olaf's second shorthanded goal of the winter.

Luke Dietsch brought the Auggies level for the second time on the night at 17:31 to send the two teams to the second intermission even at 2-2. Rodriguez netted the eventual game-winner, his seventh of the season in three games against the Oles, at 10:05 of the third before Holland provided the hosts some insurance at 12:50.

With St. Olaf in search of a late rally, an Augsburg minor penalty at 18:44 allowed the Oles to create a two-man advantage by pulling junior Noah Parker, but the Auggies preserved the two-goal lead to complete the weekend sweep.

Parker finished the night with 38 saves, making double-digit stops in each of the three periods for St. Olaf. Nick Schmit made 17 of his 22 saves over the first two periods for Augsburg.

The Oles travel to the University of St. Thomas to begin their series with the Tommies on Friday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. at St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights.
