NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Junior
Roshen Jaswal posted his first-career two-goal game, but visiting UW-Stout used a three-goal first period to defeat the St. Olaf College men's hockey team in its first game at St. Olaf Ice Arena on Friday evening.
In front of a capacity crowd of 943, UW-Stout (10-4-1) surged out to a 3-0 lead in the first 16 minutes of the game before Jaswal netted the first goal for St. Olaf (3-7-1) at its new home rink with 2:10 to go in the opening period. The junior added another goal late in the third period, but it was not enough for the Oles.
The Blue Devils jumped out to the three-goal lead on goals from Mathias Ahman, Arturas Laukaitis and Gavin Smith in the span of 8:12 in the first period. Trailing by three, Jaswal fired in a wrist shot from the left point off a cross-ice pass from classmate
Will Dittrich for his first goal of the season. Jaswal's goal came after he hit the pipe for the sixth time this season, ringing a shot off the cross bar with the game scoreless early on.
UW-Stout stretched its lead to 4-1 at 17:39 of the second period when Laukaitis set up Alex Nagel, who added a goal to his assist on Ahman's opener. Lucas Carroll also had a pair of assists in the win for the Blue Devils.
Jaswal capped the scoring on the power play at 13:59 of the third period with a shot from the middle of the right circle that trickled in past Tommi Ahlgren. Two minutes earlier,
Emil Hiiri came within inches of a goal when his blast from the right point got behind Ahlgren but stayed out.
In his second-straight start since returning from injury, senior
Eric Hancock made 23 saves for the Oles on the night. Ahlgren earned the win with 23 saves of his own.
St. Olaf wraps up its first weekend on its new home ice against No. 1 UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m.
