Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball suffers first conference loss to the Cobbers

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Thomas Schyma banked in a game-winning three-pointer with 4.1 seconds remaining in the game to lead Concordia-Moorhead to a 61-57 victory over the St. Olaf College men's basketball team in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) contest Saturday afternoon at Skoglund Center.

The loss was the first for St. Olaf (6-5, 5-1 MIAC) in conference play and snapped the Oles' six-game winning streak that dated back to Nov. 24. Concordia (3-8, 2-4 MIAC) held St. Olaf to 23 points in the second half and broke a 57-57 tie on Schyma's three-pointer with five seconds to go to snatch the victory.

Junior Troy Diggins Jr. led the Oles with 12 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals and senior Austin Korba registered 11 points, six rebounds and two steals. Senior Frank Delaney and junior Nate Albers each added 10 points for the Oles, along with seven rebounds and three steals from Albers.

After the Cobbers jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first half, the Oles answered with a 8-3 run after a layup from Travis Fauchald to bring St. Olaf within one at 12-11 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the half.

With 5:40 to go in the first half, Diggins finished a layup inside to give St. Olaf their first lead of the game at 23-22.  The Oles held the Cobbers to just one point in the last 5:26 of the first half and took a nine-point leading heading into the second period after back-to-back baskets from Korba and Diggins at the end of the period.

Sophomore Dominic Bledsoe sank a three-pointer that gave St. Olaf a 14-point lead, which was their largest of the game, with 16:29 remaining in the contest. Concordia answered with an 18-4 run and tied the game at 46-46 after Urie finished a layup.

After trailing by two Albers finished a layup inside to even the score at 57-57 with 27 seconds left in the game. The Cobbers ran the clock down on the next possession and Schyma sank the game-winning three-pointer with 4.1 remaining to put Concordia on top at 60-57.

St. Olaf threw the ball down the court for a last chance opportunity, but Andrew Holen of the Cobbers stole the pass and was fouled, which sent him to the line to account for the final margin of the game.

The Oles shot 35.5 percent from the floor and were one for seven from the three-point line in the second half, compared to 48 percent shooting from Concordia, but out-rebounded the Cobbers 36-34 in the contest.

St. Olaf is back to action Monday, January 7 as they travel to St. Paul, Minn. for a MIAC contest against St. Thomas, beginning at 7 p.m.
