NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team quickly responded from falling behind and went on to tie Augsburg University, 1-1, after double overtime in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MICA) contest on Saturday at Rolf Mellby Field.
After a scoreless first half, Callie Athey gave Augsburg (9-2-1, 5-0-1 MIAC) the lead in the 62nd minute, but St. Olaf (7-3-2, 4-1-1 MIAC) answered less than two minutes later. Junior
Brynne Davis helped the Oles become the first team to take a point off the Auggies in MIAC play this season by recording a career-high 14 saves in the tie.
Athey broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute with a long-range strike that went over Davis after Athey collected a pass from Molly Conners a little over 25 yards out.
A minute and a half later, Anderson brought the Oles back level with her team-leading fifth goal of the season, sneaking the ball inside the near post from the right side of the box after running onto a pass from senior
Katie Brumley.
With just over a minute left in regulation, Davis rushed off her line to deny Ashley St. Aubin, the MIAC's co-leading goal scorer, from winning the game for the Auggies after St. Aubin got in behind the St. Olaf back line. Junior
Rose Sandell made a crucial block on a St. Aubin shot with just four seconds remaining that appeared to be goal-bound after St. Aubin got free on the left side of the box.
St. Olaf generated three shots in the first overtime session, while Augsburg had two, but Davis and Emily Chapman each saved the lone shot on goal they faced. Davis had two saves to make the second overtime to help the Oles earn a point.
In addition to being a career-high total, Davis' 14 saves were tied for the second-highest total by a MIAC goalkeeper this season. Augsburg outshot St. Olaf by a 31-19 margin in the game, including a 15-7 differential in shots on goal.
The Oles are back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 15 in a road game at St. Kate's at 3:30 p.m.
