NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The No. 23-ranked St. Olaf College volleyball team saw its seven-match winning streak come to an end with a 21-25, 25-13, 25-17, 25-18 road loss to the University of Saint Mary's (Minn.) on Saturday afternoon at Saint Mary's Gym.
Playing its first match as a nationally-ranked team in over eight years, St. Olaf (21-4, 4-3 MIAC) won the opening set before Saint Mary's (14-9, 4-3 MIAC) rallied to win the final three sets and record its second win over a nationally-ranked team in its last three matches. Three of the Oles' four losses this season have been in true road matches.
Senior
Lauren Rewers and sophomore
Katelyn Lannom each had 12 kills for St. Olaf, which hit .201 in the match. Rewers' 12 kills moved her to within six of Danica Finseth '06 for seventh in program history with 1,358 kills in her career. Lannom had 12 kills on 22 attempts with just one error to hit an even .500.
Junior
Summer Reid joined Rewers and Lannom in double figures with 11 kills, while junior
Lexi Wall, the reigning Sports Imports/AVCA NCAA Division III National Player of the Week, had 44 assists. Senior
Emily Jarnigan surpassed the 500-dig mark for the season with 21 digs in the loss.
Jarnigan had a pair of aces in a 5-0 run that gave St. Olaf an early 7-2 lead in the first set. The Oles led by as many as nine, 17-8, before the Cardinals made it interesting with a 6-0 run to get within three. Saint Mary's got as close as one on two occasions, but St. Olaf won three-straight points to go ahead 24-20 before sealing the set on a kill by Rewers.
After committing nine errors in the opening set, Saint Mary's committed just nine more over the final three sets. The hosts hit .433 in the second set, never looking back after surging out to a 15-4 lead.
St. Olaf won the first point of the third set but that was the only lead the Oles would hold in the set. Already leading 10-8, the Cardinals won five of the next six points to stretch their lead to 15-9 and led by at least four for the rest of the third set.
In the fourth set, the Oles trimmed a pair of five-point deficit to two, 20-18, after three-straight kills, but Saint Mary's proceeded to win the final five points of the set to close out the match.
The Cardinals hit .255 in the match and were led by Rachel Kedl, who had 15 kills and no errors on 26 swings (.577). Erin Lime and Linnaea Wallis posted double-digit kills with 12 and 11, respectively, while Liilian Braun tallied 43 assists. DeJaye Baab recorded a match-high 22 digs.
St. Olaf heads to Arden Hills, Minn. to take on Bethel in MIAC play on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.
