NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Carleton College scored twice in the first 14 minutes on its way to defeating the St. Olaf College women's soccer team, 7-2, in a matchup of crosstown rivals on Wednesday afternoon at Bell Field.
Carleton (9-3-3, 6-2-2) scored in the fourth, 11th and 13th minutes to get out to an early 3-0 lead and went on to clinch its spot in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs with the win. First year
Tessa Anderson scored both goals for St. Olaf (7-8-2, 4-5-1 MIAC), which saw its playoff hopes come to an end with the loss.
The Knights opened the scoring 3:14 into the game when Rainey Tilley finished into an empty net after rounding the goalie off an assist from Lily Hurtubise. Carleton added goals from Annette Shumway and Madeline Marker 2:33 apart in the next 10 minutes to take a commanding 3-0 lead.
Anderson got one goal back for the Oles in the 20th minute, intercepting a clearance on the right side of the box before tucking the ball into the left corner of the net for her first of the afternoon.
Carleton extended its lead to 5-1 at halftime with two goals from Mackenzie Korpi less than five minutes apart later in the half. The Knights scored on all five of their shots on target in the opening half.
Just 1:11 into the second half, Anderson scored her second of the game, tapping in a cross from junior
Emily Vetsch, who earned her first assist of the season. Anderson's two-goal performance was the first of her collegiate career and brought her team-leading goal tally to seven this season.
Goals from Bella Bettner in the 79th minute and Nora Mertz inside the final minute accounted for the final score line.
St. Olaf closes out its season on Saturday, Nov. 2 by hosting Concordia-Moorhead at 3:30 p.m. on Alumni Recognition Day at Rolf Mellby Field.
