St. Olaf trailed 19-17 in the opening set before using a late rally to come away with the set. After calling timeout down 19-17, the Oles got back-to-back kills from Reid and Rewers to tie it up and start a 5-1 run that gave St. Olaf a 22-20 lead. The teams alternated points for the rest of the set, as a pair of late attack errors by the Eagles helped the Oles wrap up the set, which featured 16 ties and eight lead changes.
Northwestern never led in the second set after St. Olaf got out to a quick 4-1 lead thanks to a pair of early service aces. The Eagles won four-straight points to tie the set at 16-16, but a 3-0 run by the Oles to break a 20-20 tie proved decisive. St. Olaf hit an even .300 in the second set after hitting .095 in the opener.
In the third, the Oles won five-of-six points to claim an 11-7 advantage, with Reid recording kills on four of the five points won during the stretch. Northwestern hung around, trailing just 16-14, before St. Olaf pulled away by winning five of the next seven points to open up a 21-16 lead. After the Eagles again got within two, 22-20, the Oles won the final three points on a kill by Lannom, an ace by Rewers and a block by Lannom and junior
Morgan Marxer.
Kendra Hardy had a match-high 16 kills and was the lone Eagle in double figures in the match. Marylyn Schroyer tallied a match-high 21 digs.
St. Olaf plays its third match in four days on Saturday, Oct. 5 when the Oles visit St. Kate's for a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) matchup at 3 p.m.
