ST. PETER, Minn. – Raphael Cattelin scored the lone goal of the game midway through the first half as regionally-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College edged the St. Olaf College men's soccer team, 1-0, on Wednesday at Gustie Soccer Field.
Cattelin scored his seventh goal of the season in the 23rd minute for Gustavus (9-2-0, 3-1-0 MIAC) and the Gusties held St. Olaf (6-5-0, 2-3-0 MIAC) off the board to pick up the narrow win. Gustavus was ranked No. 6 in this week's United Soccer Coaches North Region rankings.
Prior to Cattelin's goal, junior
Thierno Gueye nearly gave the Oles the game's first goal, but saw his shot hit the post in the 15th minute. Eight and a half minutes later, Cattelin grabbed the game's only goal off assists from Cole Schwartz and Matt Gibbons.
In search of a tying goal, St. Olaf generated four corner kicks in the second half, including two in the final six minutes, but could not find a way past Wesley Sanders, who earned his ninth victory of the season with two saves for Gustavus.
Junior
Hamza Osman and the St. Olaf defense limited the top-scoring team in NCAA Division III to one goal, as Osman made five saves on the afternoon. The Gusties entered the game with 42 goals in 10 games.
The Oles return home to face Augsburg on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. at Rolf Mellby Field.
