STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Host UW-Stevens Point scored once in each period to defeat the St. Olaf College women's hockey team, 3-0, in the season opener for both teams on Friday night at Ice Hawks Arena.
UW-Stevens Point (1-0-0) got goals from Alana Achterkirch, Shannon Motzko and Ashtyn Wiltscheck, while Marit Larson logged a 19-save shutout for the hosts. In her first-career start, sophomore
Ivy Shonka made 35 saves for St. Olaf (0-1-0), which was playing its first game under head coach
Tracy Johnson.
Shonka made six saves in the early goings to help the Oles keep the Pointers at bay until Achterkirch opened the scoring at 13:50 of the first period off assists from Motzko and Cassie Knutson.
In the second, Shonka stopped 19 of the 20 shots she faced, as she was beaten only by Motzko at the 13:21 mark. The score remained 2-0 until Wiltscheck capped the scoring on the power play at 6:15 of the third, with Alex Grubbs and Cassie Newcomer earning assists.
After mustering six shots over the first two periods, the Oles generated 13 in the third period but could not find a way past Larson. Sophomore
Annika Patterson won 10-of-15 faceoffs for St. Olaf, which got a team-high four shots from senior
Johanna Glaaser.
The two teams complete their season-opening series on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 2:30 p.m. at Ice Hawks Arena.
