Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Men's hockey downed by Hamline in series opener

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Visiting Hamline University scored a pair of second-period goals to break a 1-1 tie and went on to defeat the St. Olaf College men's hockey team, 4-1, in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action on Friday night at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

After Hamline (2-5-1, 1-2-0 MIAC) and St. Olaf (0-7-0, 0-3-0 MIAC) exchanged first-period goals, the Pipers scored twice in the first nine minutes of the second period to take the lead and claimed the victory thanks to a goal and two assists from Jeron Hirschfeld. Sophomore Jared Pedersen scored his first-career goal for the Oles in the loss.

Hamline got on the board just 35 seconds into the game when Bailey Martin raced onto a puck lofted in behind the St. Olaf defense and got a backhand past sophomore Cooper Lukenda to give the Pipers the lead inside the opening minute.

Later in the period, the Pipers killed off a minor penalty with five minutes to go but were whistled for another one just 54 seconds later. The Oles cashed in on their second try on the man advantage when senior Luke Ranallo played in Pedersen up the right with a long cross-ice pass and Pedersen beat Sam Nelson over the right shoulder to tie it up at 17:16.

Hirschfeld netted the eventual game-winning goal at 3:17 of the second period, blasting the puck home from the right point after a failed clearance and, after Hamline killed off another minor penalty, Sam Babrowski tipped in a shot by Hirschfeld on the power play at 8:58 to push the Pipers' lead to 3-1. St. Olaf had a chance to close the gap after Hamline committed a major penalty midway through the period, but Martin saved all seven shots on goal in the five-minute power play.

Early in the third period, the Oles hit the post twice in the space of a little more than a minute, as senior Will Dittrich set up classmate Kyle Rimbach and sophomore Tyler Uravage, but both of their shots caromed off the right post. With 5:30 to go, Nelson denied Pedersen his second goal of the night in a 1-on-1 to keep Hamline up two.

The Pipers tacked on a late goal from Jackson Bond at 15:06 of the third to cap the scoring and pick up the win, despite being outshot by a 41-24 margin in the game. Nelson earned the victory with 40 saves for Hamline, while Lukenda suffered the loss with a 20-save night for the Oles.

The two teams finish off their series on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. at TRIA Rink in St. Paul.
