NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The sixth-seeded St. Olaf College men's soccer team saw its first appearance in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs since 2015 end in the quarterfinals with a 2-1 loss at crosstown rival and third-seeded Carleton College on Tuesday afternoon at Bell Field.
All three of the game's goals came in the opening half, as Carleton (14-4-1) took the lead in the 14th minute through David Rubin before junior
Will Douglas tied it up for St. Olaf (9-10) in the 35th minute. Tarek Bos-Shadi grabbed the eventual game-winning goal just over two minutes before the break for the Knights, who held on in the second half to survive and advance.
Carleton will face a quick turnaround for the semifinals, as the Knights will travel to second-seeded St. Thomas for an 11:30 a.m. kickoff on Wednesday, Nov. 6. The other semifinal will see top-seeded Gustavus host fourth-seeded Saint John's at 2 p.m. after the Johnnies ousted fifth-seeded Macalester in a shootout following 110 minutes of scoreless soccer in Collegeville.
The 2-1 win for Carleton was the second in second in eight days for the Knights against the Oles and was the ninth of the last 11 meetings between the two programs decided by a single goal. The Knights also extended their home unbeaten streak to 23-straight games dating back to Sept. 30, 2017.
Carleton opened the scoring just over 13 minutes into the game when Rubin redirected a cross from Marco da Cunha on the right into the left side of the net from in front for his first goal of the season. The goal came after junior
Hamza Osman had made a pair of saves to keep out the Knights in the early stages.
Osman produced a leaping save to keep out an effort by Trevor Jones in the 29th minute and St. Olaf tied the game a little more than six minutes later on Douglas' fourth goal in the last six games. Douglas' equalizer came off a cross from first year
Max Eisenfeld, as Douglas fired a shot that was deflected in off a defender for his sixth goal of the season.
With 2:20 remaining in the opening half, Bos-Shadi netted the eventual game-winning goal, punching in a loose ball near the left post after Osman had made a pair of close-range saves shortly after a Carleton free kick.
St. Olaf had the vast majority of the possession in the second half as it pushed for a second equalizer, but Carleton held firm. The Knights nearly got an insurance goal with 10 minutes to go, but Bos-Shadi had a shot cleared off the line by the St. Olaf defense.
The Oles generated corner kicks in quick succession in the 83rd and 84th minutes but was unable to get a shot on goal, as the Knights ran down the clock to keep its hopes of defending its MIAC Playoff title from a year ago alive.
The game marked the end of the careers of St. Olaf's four seniors:
Keith Loukas,
Sam Heupel,
Pato Cortina and
Jovan Carter. Head coach
Travis Wall will bring back a group that included 13 first years this season next fall.
