NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Senior
Caleb Callaway scored on his Senior Night for the St. Olaf College men's hockey team, but Saint Mary's held off a late Ole rally for a 2-1 victory in the season finale for St. Olaf on Saturday evening at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
Saint Mary's (8-14-3, 7-7-2 MIAC) built a 2-0 lead on goals from Tommy Stang late in the second and Carter Dahl early in the third before Callaway got St. Olaf (5-17-2, 3-11-2 MIAC) on the board at the 8:38 mark of the final period. The Oles had a power-play opportunity two minutes after Callaway's goal, but were unable to convert, as the Cardinals held on for the win.
Tommy Stang scored for the second night in a row to give Saint Mary's a 1-0 lead at 16:12 of the second period, tipping in a shot from the point to break the deadlock. The teams had combined for nine penalties and just eight shots on goal in the scoreless first period.
Carter Dahl doubled the Cardinals' advantage at 3:59 of the second with his second of the weekend before Callaway reduced the Oles' deficit back to one a little less than five minutes later. After a pair of minor penalties to St. Olaf had negated most of a major penalty on Saint Mary's, Callaway scored on a breakaway off a stretch pass from
Tobias Gabrielsen in a 4-on-4 to make it a 2-1 game.
The Cardinals were whistled for minor penalties at 10:29 and 12:24 of the third period, but the Oles were unable to capitalize as the two teams both were 0-for-6 on the power play in the game that featured 19 combined penalties. St. Olaf pulled Hancock out of a timeout with 1:51 remaining, but Blair Sanders had just one save to make in the remaining time for Saint Mary's.
Al Rogers picked up the win by stopping all 11 shots he faced over the first two periods for the Cardinals, while Sanders had 10 saves in the third period to make the lead hold up. Hancock tallied 21 saves, including 13 in the second period, for the Oles.
Prior to the game, St. Olaf honored its 10 seniors and its director of hockey operations, Owen Sandercox, as well as their parents on the ice.
