Men's basketball drops heartbreaker at buzzer in MIAC Quarterfinals

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Booker Coplin hit a pull-up three-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer to give Augsburg University a 67-64 victory over the St. Olaf College men's basketball team in the quarterfinals of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs on Tuesday evening at Si Melby Hall.

Out of a timeout, Coplin ran the clock down with the dribble at the top of the key and drained a three-pointer as time expired to lift Augsburg (19-8) into the semifinals. Coplin's shot came after senior Austin Korba tied the game for St. Olaf (13-13) with an off-balance three-pointer from the left wing with 58 seconds to go.

The game marked the end of the careers for St. Olaf's five seniors: Austin Korba, Ben Scheffley, Sam Stensgard, Frank Delaney and Jake Lyle. The five-man senior class helped the Oles to two NCAA Tournament appearances, three MIAC Playoff berths and 63 wins over their four seasons.

Three days after scoring 43 points in a loss to the Oles in the regular-season finale, Coplin recorded a double-double of 33 points and 15 rebounds, while shooting 13-for-28 from the floor. Henry Mulligan was the only other double-digit scorer for the Auggies with 13 points.

Korba posted a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds in his final game as an Ole. Junior Nate Albers came off the bench to provide 15 points, while classmate Noah Beck added 12 points, four rebounds and three assists.

The two teams combined to miss their first six shots of the game before a Mulligan three-pointer 2:22 in put Augsburg up 4-1. After going 0-for-3 to start the game, the Auggies made five-straight shots to take a 13-8 lead five minutes in.

With St. Olaf trailing 17-11, Albers scored six-straight points off the bench to tie the game at 17-17, but Augsburg responded with five-straight points from Coplin to go back up by five with 11:22 left in the half.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Korba and Beck around the six-minute mark gave the Oles their first lead of the half at 30-29. Later in the half, a McKiernan three-pointer and a Coplin layup pushed the Auggies' lead back to five, 39-34, with 1:26 to go, but a Korba pull-up three-pointer helped send St. Olaf into the locker room down 41-37.

Korba and Albers combined for 23 points in the opening half, while Coplin had 16 points on 7-for-17 shooting and 11 rebounds for the Auggies. St. Olaf led for just 18 seconds in the first 20 minutes.

Layups from Troy Diggins Jr. and Korba brought the Oles within a point five-and-a-half minutes into the second half, as St. Olaf held Augsburg to just three points in the first 7:54 of the second half. Coplin ended the drought for the Auggies with four quick points to give the hosts a 48-43 lead with 11:44 left.

A three-point play from Beck tied the score at 48-48 midway through the second half before a Korba layup on the next possession gave the Oles their second lead of the game with 9:24 to go. A 54-50 advantage with 7:55 left was St. Olaf's largest of the game before five quick points from Mulligan swung the lead back to Augsburg with 5:58 remaining.

After the Oles led 60-57 with 4:10 to go, Coplin hit three-pointers on consecutive possessions to help the Auggies to a 63-61 lead a minute later. Augsburg split a pair of free throws with 2:09 to go before Korba's final-minute, game-tying three-pointer evened it at 64-64.

Coplin missed a jumper with 30 seconds to go but Aaron Ertz tracked down the offensive rebound to give Coplin and the Auggies another chance on the final shot.
