Allyson Fuller each reached double figures, but the St. Olaf College women's basketball team fell to the third-ranked University of St. Thomas, 90-49, in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) contest Wednesday evening at Schoenecker Arena.
St. Olaf (8-14, 5-10 MIAC) led, 16-15, after a basket from junior
Britta Koenen with 3:48 to go in the first quarter, but St. Thomas (21-1, 15-0 MIAC) ended the quarter on a 12-0 run and pulled away in the second, while holding the Oles scoreless for the first 2:43 of the period.
Lewis led the Oles with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists, while Ash added 12 points and seven rebounds. Fuller reached double figures with 11 points and two steals and junior
Ella Skrien posted seven points and two rebounds.
Despite the Tommies jumping out to a 9-4 lead in the first quarter, the Oles answered with 10-3 run and took a two-point lead after a Lewis layup. St. Olaf took it second lead of the quarter as Koenen finished a layup inside, but St. Thomas held the Oles scoreless for the last 3:48 of the period while scoring 12 points.
The Tommies started the second quarter with a 9-0 run and took a 20-point lead as Hannah Spaulding converted a three-point play. With 1:34 to go in the half, St. Thomas took its largest lead in the half at, 55-22. The Tommies led by at least 29 points the rest of the way in the second half.
At 3:36 in the fourth quarter, Fuller sank a three-pointer followed by a pair of free throws from Lewis. The Oles held St. Thomas to three points in the final 4:57 of the game.
St. Olaf looks to bounce back on Saturday, Feb. 9, as they host Saint Benedict and celebrate Senior Day at Skoglund Center beginning at 5 p.m.
